The Concept of “sensitivity” in Nursing

 

In nursing practice, professionals often use concepts to represent mental images of certain phenomena. The goal of concept analysis and development – bringing more clarity and promoting shared understanding of the concetps (McEwen & Wills, 2018). The purpose of this paper is to identify the concept development approach used by Sayers and de Vries (2008) and to compare its steps with the concept development steps described by McEwen & Wills (2018).

Concept Development Phases in the Study

Sayers and de Vries (2008) explore the concept of ‘being sensitive’ in nursing. The authors selected Schwartz-Barcott and Kim’s hybrid model of concept development (Sayers & de Vries, 2008). They implemented three concept development phases: theoretical, fieldwork (empirical) and analytical (Sayers & de Vries, 2008). During the theoretical phase, the authors performed a thorough literature research on the term ‘sensitivity’ and on ‘being sensitive’. The data were collected from various sources – dictionaries, health and nursing literature (Sayers & de Vries, 2008).

During the empirical phase, the authors conducted nine interviews with s nurses working in cancer nursing and palliative care (Sayers & de Vries, 2008). The focus on the interviews was on exploring the concept of ‘being sensitive’ and the opposite concept, ‘being insensitive’ both within and outside nursing. The authors also investigated if ‘being sensitive’ was an innate or a learned concept, and the benefits of this concept in nursing.

Finally, at the analytical step Sayers and de Vries (2008) used the findings of two previous phases to present a definition and dimensions of ‘being sensitive’ and ‘being insensitive’ as conceptualized by nurses.

Concept Development Phases in Schwartz-Barcott and Kim’s Hybrid Model

According to McEwen and Wills (2018), Schwartz-Barcott and Kim’s hybrid concept development model consists of three phases: theoretical, fieldwork, and final analytical phase. The activities during the theoretical phase include: selecting the concept, reviewing literature sources, determining concept meaning and measurement, and selecting a working definition (McEwen & Wills, 2018). The fieldwork (experimental) phase consists of setting the stage, selecting relevant cases, collecting and analyzing data (McEwen & Wills, 2018). The aim of the final analytical phase is to weigh findings and to compile the report.

It is possible to see that Sayers and de Vries (2008) used all three stages of Schwartz-Barcott and Kim’s concept development model in their study. The activities described in the study for each phase match the model’s description given by McEwen and Wills (2018).
