“A UML Profile for Goal-Oriented Modeling” Article Review

The claim that “There is no difference between modeling the system-as-is and the system-to-be” seems to be totally wrong since the system-as-is is different from the system-to-be.

First, the system-as-is focuses on the current model and functioning of the system relies on available resources and current operations that does not need any changes. Instead, the system-to-be is oriented on the achievement of better results and changes, while changes are not typical for the system-as-is, unless the system starts malfunctioning and fails to reach its goals. Another reason to refute the claim is the intrinsic orientation of the system-as-is on improvements of the existing system, whereas the system-to-be intends to introduce improvements into the system to enhance its performance and functioning. Finally, the system-as-is involves the improvement of the existing system, whereas the system-to-be focuses on the development of the new system that has never existed before or is consistently better or different from the existing one. This is why the two systems are totally different and the claim “There is no difference between modeling the system-as-is and the system-to-be” is apparently wrong.

The extension from the article written by M.R. Abid and other researchers makes it easier to build models because models become more detailed and goal-oriented. The latter feature is particularly important because one always keeps in mind the goal of the model that facilitates the construction of the entire model. Often developers of models focus their attention on minor issues to the extent that they forget the main goal of the model. As a result, their models become ineffective. Instead, the proposed extension helps to stay focused on the goal that guides all steps of the model development process. As a result, the model becomes very effective and goal-oriented.
