The American Revolution; The Seven Years’ War | Discussion

1) Identify 3 factors that increased tensions between England & its North American colonies in the period 1763—1776 & explain how these factors led to the American Revolution.

First, the work of Thomas Pain was one of the factors that stimulated the American Revolution. Pane wrote complex philosophy and made persuasive and passionate argument that caused many American colonists to break away from British rules. He was a major figure who influenced American people’s spirit of rebellion. Second, the passing of the numerous acts such as Stamp Act, Townshend Acts, Tea Act, and Intolerable Act were another factor that increased tensions between Great Britain and North Americans and led to Revolutionary war (American colonists argued about acts because there was no representation in parliament). Third, British restrictions on westward population movement was another factor that affected tensions between England and its North American colonies (Proclamation of 1963), as many colonists desired for good farmland, trade, etc.

2) Using the excerpts, answer (a), (b), and (c):

a) briefly describe one significant difference between Adams’ understanding and Rush’s understanding of the American Revolution.

Adams believed that revolutionary spirit was very dominant before the American Revolution, including the constant and increased resistance to the British regulations. Rush viewed Revolution as changing political systems that will continue until the American government becomes perfect.

b) Briefly explain how one specific historical event or development from the period between 1760 and 1800 could be used to support Adams’ interpretation.

Stamp Act and Stamp Act Congress was one specific historical event that supports Adams’ interpretation. Tax protests and the development of Americans opposition is an example of Americans rebellion that supports Adams’ view of the Revolution.

c) Briefly explain how one specific historical event or development from the period between 1760 and 1800 could be used to support Rush’s interpretation.

Slavery was one specific historical development that support Rush’s interpretation. In that period, slavery was an unresolved issue (Northwest Ordinance – 1787). This Act gave people the rights to a fair trial, guaranteed property rights, banned slavery in the territories of the Northwest, and crated system where territories could become states.

3) Evaluate the extent to which the Seven Years’ War (French and Indian War, 1754–1763) marked a turning point in American relations with Great Britain, analyzing what changed and what stayed the same from the period before the war to the period after it.

First, The French and Indian War affected the elimination of the French property in the United States, which marked a turning point. Second, the War caused the Britain to begin taxation more strictly and they provided greater control over the colonists (Grenville Ministry). Thus, taxes raised on colonists to pay for the debt. Third, England increased political control over the settled regions, and sustained its commercial supremacy.
