An Exploration of High-Risk Leisure Consumption Essay

Skydiving as a specific type of subculture has numerous aspects to consider. Extreme sports allow to achieve the desired results, while avoiding the problem of unrealized goals. Advances in the field of extreme leisure encourage young people to achieve the objectives in other areas of life, such as learning or research activities. Subculture was the result of extreme lifestyle of modern society, which offers comfort, but at the same time, monotonous living conditions. The desire to go beyond an “ordinary” person pushes individuals to do extreme sports. The high popularity of extreme sports is due to the desire to acquire new experiences and skills in a relatively short period of time. This subculture is classified as a counterculture which rejects the dominant values and behavior.

Material culture is a set of material values ​​created by a specific culture. As a matter of fact, different societies are characterized by different cultures. It deals with the physical objects, resources, tools, means of production, goods that people use in order to define their culture.  Based on our article, it is possible to provide the following examples of material culture: modern rectangular parachutes, helmets, jumpsuits, buildings, runways, video cameras, etc. Those certain objects were chosen to demonstrate the importance of material values that can characterize the particular community.

Non‐material culture deals with various ideas that individuals have about their culture (norms, rules, regulations, beliefs, morals, language). Rituals play a significant role when it comes to skydiving. It consists of a set of ideas and beliefs about this specific subculture. In fact, those ideas, beliefs and values help shape the community as a whole. Hence, it is a fact that people, who put their lives at risk and danger every day, every hour, even every minute, remain one of those who know the value of life. All in all, extreme sports teach people to love their lives.
