Analysis Of The Interview With School Principal On The Topic Of Professional Development

I spent one hour in the field to complete the Designated Field Experience. I interviewed my school principal on the topic of professional development. The setting was the school principal’s office. I conducted an interview that consisted of a set of questions. I was thinking about the validity of the questions. I was feeling that the interviewee gave fair responses. I found that different topics are present in the professional development program, including the topics which refer to communication in school settings, the types of leadership and management practices, the opportunities for career development and personal development, teaching strategies and research-related practices.  I also found that the program was developed by experts in the field of professional development of school staff. The program was sponsored districtwide to ensure that all activities are aimed at achieving the established goals and address mission and vision of the school and district. Teachers were the participants in the development process. The program was designed to provide organizational assessments and surveys to address organizational needs. I found that the professional development program supports the school’s Continuous Improvement Plan in different ways. First of all, it helps to adapt to changing environment and make considerable improvement in the areas of teaching, assessment, leadership and management, communication, etc. Secondly, the professional development program helps to increase school staff’s motivation and job satisfaction to ensure positive outcomes in professional activities. I found that the implementation of the mission of the Staff Development Office through providing effective professional development program serves not only teachers and other school staff, but also students. When teachers have an opportunity to develop to their fullest potential, students’ achievement will be increased. Besides, this interview helped me in to my research practice as I had an opportunity to learn more about the effectiveness of professional development programs. According to Victoria Bernhardt (2013), “professional development helps staff members, teachers and administrators change the manner in which they work, i.e. how they make decisions, gather, analyze and utilize data; plan, teach and monitor achievement, evaluate personnel; and assess the impact of new approaches to instruction and assessment on students” (p. 298). Now I understand more clearly that chosen actions reflected best practice. The implications may include poor communication and decision making. The aligned leadership skills and professional dispositions reflected in this event include high level of responsibility, improved communication and decision making. I found the evidence that aligned to the established vision and mission statements in the content of the professional development program, including the goals of the program, lesson plans and school slogan. The school principal provided clear and comprehensive responses to my questions, demonstrating excellence in management and leadership practices.
