How Are Cows Used By Human Essay

Since the moment, when cows were domesticated, millions of them are used all over the world for the sake of producing milk and meat. Unfortunately “Cows used by the dairy industry are intensively confined, continually impregnated, and bred for high milk production with little concern for their well-being” (Simon 2004). Most of the consumers of these products are not aware of the actual situation in production of cow’s milk and meat. On the surface domestication of cows brought positive factors for people; however, the issue remains controversial due to the conditions provided for these animals.

In order to be economically advantageous, the production of milk and meat forces to keep all the cows in constant cycle of impregnation, birth, milking. After 5 years, cows are sent to slaughter. Natural age for a cow is 20 years. Male caves are usually sold for meat, some of them are raised for beef, others – for veal.

There are several myths, which were invented probably for economic advantage of the farmers. A lot of people consider milk of cows to be perfect for children. In fact however, according to numerous scientific researches – cow’s milk is one of the most serious sources of food allergies among infants and small children. A lot of people are sure that milk is the source of calcium, but “Medical studies indicate that rather than preventing the disease, milk may actually increase women’s risk of getting osteoporosis” (Simon 2004). Protein could also be gained from nuts, seeds, beans and so on, but not from cow’s milk.

Overall, a lot of issues, related to production of cow’s meat and milk have been recently reconsidered by scientists and researchers; certainly most of them are in the process of investigation, still usual people also need to react to them and contribute to improving the situation in this type of production, for example by considering of such alternatives as soy or other products, which in reality are more advantageous for our organisms.
