“Art & Fear” by Virilio Paul

The meaning of art in human lives for the whole generations and for each single individual could not be underestimated. Art is the form of expression, along with this art is the way to distract from the reality and then return to it, but in a different form. Chapter 1 The Pitiless Art in Art and Fear is devoted to exploration of the concepts of contemporary art. The author provides bright examples of how he made the attempts to perceive the contemporary art in order to understand, whether it is really that harsh and pitiless, as it is commented to be. He talks about his visit to the Museum at Auschwitz and his impression from the exhibits there. His perceptions from those exhibits and his following ideas about the role of the Nazi terror, as “the balance of terror, which is the basis for the peace”, seem to be controversial and at the same time appealing. (Virilio 2004).  Art and cruelty are the things, which are often not associated with each other, but in fact they are closely connected and the author describes this connection and its sources. There is a question upon reading the author’s comments about the pitiless and catastrophic century, as he calls it due to Titanic, Chernobyl, Hiroshima and Nagasaki – is art possible in any of its forms without tragedies and destruction? Could the only source of art be found in creation and revitalization? Most probably the answers are negative. Explanation of this is the fact that art used to be and continues to be full of terror, miseries, blood, and extremism and so on with the aim of adding a portion of significance to the artistic representations. Brutality is not aimed at warning or prevention; instead this is a kind of artistic shape for contemporary artists and their works. The fact is that art became like this not only in the twentieth century, it was similar before, even during ancient times.
