The Concept of Home Soft Décor & Artistic Atmosphere in the West & in China

How Does the Market Respond to the Perception of Home Soft Décor and Artistic Atmosphere in the West and in China?

I Introduction

a) Statement of the Problem/ Thesis Question

When it comes to decoration of home space, the majority of the scholars tend to focus their attention on what is perceived as “hard décor”. Nevertheless, its counterpart, namely “soft décor”, should be seen as an aspect that is equally important for the understanding of the trends of home decoration.

What is even more important is that the very concept of décor is understood differently in the West and in China. In the first case, a decorator strives to create a uniquely artistic atmosphere that is expected to reflect the personality of the homeowner. In China, decoration serves another purpose: it ensures that the harmony of the environment is achieved.

Given all this, it would be logical to assume that the market will respond differently to the perception of home soft décor and supply different items so that people would be able to satisfy their aesthetic needs. That is why the current study was designed to examine how the market responds to the perception of home soft décor and artistic atmosphere in the Western countries and in China.

b) Purpose of the study

The purpose of the study is to explore the ways in which differences in the understanding of such important aspects of home soft décor and artistic atmosphere are a reflection in the market. Given the fact that the aesthetic taste is different in the two cases, it is obvious that the products that are available in the market will also be rather different.

c) Theoretical basis

The book titled David Hicks on home decoration by David Hicks serves as one of the theoretical foundations of the study. The author suggests that home soft décor should be guided by two primary ideas: creativity should only be applied when it is appropriate; it is essential to maintain the cohesion of the overall design.

Atmosphere by Peter Zumthor is yet another book that contributed to the theoretical basis of the research at hand. It claims that some of the principles that are widely spread in architecture can be applied to home soft décor and enhance the aesthetic value. As a result, it is possible to assume that there are some global principles that determine whether the work of a home decorator will be successful or not.

Furthermore, the project titled Art House which was developed by Chara Schreyer and Gary Hutton provides a new perspective on what home soft décor could look like. In it, the author shows that it is possible to saturate home space with reproductions of iconic pieces of art and create a whole new aesthetic environment.

d) The Scope of the Study

The current study was designed to achieve the following three aims:

  • the first aim is to produce a deep theoretical examination of the concept of home soft décor relying on the contemporary scholarly research.
  • the second aim is to provide a comparison of the ways in which home soft décor is perceived in the Western countries and in China and how the market responds to these difference.
  • the third aim is to outline the future trends in the development of home soft décor as well as artistic atmosphere creation.

II Literature Review and Methodology

a) Existing Literature on the Subject

– Different Perception of Home Soft Décor

There is a number of ways in which the fundamental role of home soft décor is perceived. It ranged from managing space to the creation of new aesthetic meaning. One should maintain a broad view of the perspectives in order to stay objective.

– The Role of Aesthetics in Design

Aesthetics plays an important role when it comes to home soft design since it provides a theoretical basis that forms the decisions of a decorator. It can also be used as a tool to produce outstanding décor solution.

– The Reflection of Psychology in Art

Art is a unique field of activity since it is capable of reflecting the deep psychological states. This should be taken into account by a decorator while producing home space since the later will affect the psychology of the people who will live there.

b) The Methodology of the Study

The current state features a comparative nature where the perception of home soft décor that is dominant in the Western countries will be compared to the one in China. Nevertheless, the study will also be taken into account the theoretical perspectives that are exist regarding the topic in question. There are three major tools that it will use:

1) Field Visits

The researcher will gain first-hand experience of the aesthetic environment of commercial as well as high-end residential places and will record the perception of it. In addition to that, several famous scholars and designers will be contacted in order to share their perspective on the peculiarities of home soft décor as it is perceived in the West and in China. The amount of first-hand materials collected by the researcher is expected to be massive.

2) Literature Review

Another important tool that will be used in the course of the research is literature review. It will include books as well as peer-reviewed literature on the topic that represents different perspectives on it. This tool will produce information that will be further used to draw theoretical assumptions and develop a broad perspective on the issue.

3) Comparative Analysis

Finally, the research will heavily rely on the comparative analysis of the perception of home soft décor as well as artistic atmosphere. The views that are prevalent in the West as well as in China will be compared in a number of cases in order to highlight the similarities and differences between the two systems of values.
