Artistic Expression Essay Example

After observing the examples of artistic expressions that I found unappealing or even ugly, I decided to focus on Willem de Kooning piece of artistic expression Woman III. This painting is one of a series of the six pictures created between 1951 and 1953. The picture represents a set of abstract lines, colors, strong brush lines, and strict shapes that creates an image of woman that stares at something or somebody. Her eyes, mouth, nose, lips, teeth, and face as a whole – everything is awful, ugly, and terrifying. I consider that the artist wants to show people the real side of woman’s appearance, her emotions, fears, perceptions, relationships, attitudes, and anxieties. At the same time, this picture of abstract painting of a woman represents the deepest emotional undercontext and a lot of meaning behind the scene. The real meaning of the picture has never been fully explained and different people interpret it in different ways. Based on my own assumptions, feelings and perceptions, I consider that the picture is unappealing because of its severity, ugly woman’s image, emotional imbalance and chaotic representation. I think that the artist in his painting wanted to show his attitudes and the relationships with women. To me, this painting is ugly; I do not believe that it can attract the viewer but evidence shows that it was sold for $137.5 million in 2006 which made it the 4th most expensive painting ever sold (therichest.com). Finally, when it concerns the question how I could define “art” or “beauty” to encompass the object I posted, I consider the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Based on chosen piece of art, I can assume that art is not always about beauty; it is an aesthetics result with deep emotional undercontext, a unique piece of handmade work with creative impulse inside.
