The Influence of Genetic, Biological, and Environmental Factors on Autism Disorder

 

For this discussion I plan to focus on autism disorder and explain how genetic, biological, and environmental factors influence the disorder, determine typical behaviors of children with autism, cognitive symptoms, and offer one specific strategy when working with a child with neurodevelopmental disorder. According to Karimi et al. (2017), autism is a “developmental disability with age of onset in childhood (under 3 years old), which is characterized by definite impairments in social interactions, abnormalities in speech, and stereotyped pattern of behaviors” (27). Evidence indicates that genetics strongly influences and increases the risks of the development of autism in children; studies show that in most cases genetics becomes one of the major causes of the development of autism. Environmental factors also make an impact; prenatal risk factors, maternal physical and mental health, age, exposure to stress and anxiety, and even socioeconomic status can increase the risk of autism; social communication and interactions, level of attention and care that a child receives, interests and activities can also contribute to the development of autism. Typical behaviors of children with autism include restricted and repetitive behaviors, social “overwhelming”, inattention, poor eye contact, socially inappropriate behaviors, etc.  Studies show that “individuals with ASD vary in language ability, ranging from absent speech to fluent language, and in cognitive development, ranging from profound intellectual disability to above-average intellectual functioning” (Chaste & Leboyer, 2012, p. 282). While observing the behaviors and symptoms of those with autism in professional settings, it becomes obvious that often these individuals represent socially inappropriate behaviors, ignore the requests of others, show aggressiveness, engage in self-stimulatory behavior, and so on. When it comes to one strategy that I would implement when working with a child with a neurodevelopmental disorder, I consider it can be effective to focus on a strategy that promote their healthier development and encourage interactive gaming activities that train their concentration, collaboration, emotional and behavioral regulation, communication, and cognition.
