Critical Analysis of From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation by Keeyanga Yamahta Taylor

Thesis

The  book From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation by Keeyanga Yamahta Taylor reveals the failure of the seeming elimination of racial inequality in the US which became obvious in the wake of the murder of Michael Brown by police officers. This tragic event did not just trigger the large scale #BlackLivesMatter movement but also reignited the struggle of African Americans for their liberation in face of the persisting racial inequality and their inferior position in the US.

Summary

The book starts with the description of the background of the rise of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The author describes the murder of Taylor Brown and brings numerous cases of the police violence and other instances of the police cruelty as well as cases of the racial discrimination or obvious facts of the inferior position of African Americans. In such a way, the author reveals that the problem of racial inequality in the US still persists, in spite of a half of a century have passed since the win of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s – 1960s. Gains of the Civil Rights Movement turn out to be illusionary since, as the author shows in the book further, African Americans are still in the lower, inferior position compared to white Americans. To put it more precisely, the author draws attention to such problems as the incarceration of African Americans, who comprise disproportionally higher share of the prison population compared to their share in the total population of the US. The author also reveals the problem of the high unemployment rate among African Americans as the major cause of high crime rates, poverty and multiple social and economic problems African Americans confront. Eventually, the author concludes that the rise of #BlackLivesMatter movement is the response to the persisting inequality of African Americans that may trigger the emergence of the new wave of civil rights activism that will ultimately close the gap between white Americans and African Americans and other minorities.

Critical Analysis

The book consists of two main parts. The first part introduces the background and major reasons for the rise of #BlackLivesMatter movement in the US. The author conducts the analysis of reasons why the movement has emerged and why people look for the change of the position of African American in the US in the 21st century, when African Americans seem to be free of racial discrimination. The second major part of the book is the analysis of persisting racial inequality and focuses on the forecast of consequences of the rise of the emergence of the new civil activist movement driven grounded on the struggle of African Americans for their rights. In such a way, the author leads the audience to the understanding of origin and reasons for the emergence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and justifies the movement because of the persisting racial inequality. At the same time, the author reveals the hidden truth that is not obvious for the public that, in spite of profound legal changes which grant equality to African Americans and other minorities, the real situation is different and they are still in the unequal position that needs changes. The author uses vivid language and picturesque details which make the key points she makes throughout the book very persuading. She combines tragic facts, such as the murder of Taylor Brown, and real life stories from the life of African Americas, with raw statistics. In such a way, she reaches emotions of the audience and brings rational explanation to the facts she describes in her book.

Conclusion

Thus, the book From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation by Keeyanga Yamahta Taylor reveals the major reasons behind the revival of civil rights activism and the new wave of struggle of African Americans for their rights.
