Breaching Exercise Free Essay

Makeup as an Example of a Negative Stereotype Against Women

Despite the latest awakening of humanity, which lead to people understanding what equality is, inequality, along with stereotypes and judgment seem to be ingrained in people’s brains. Since stereotypes have existed for centuries, we follow them every day unwillingly, without even intending to do so. What is more, everyone around us seems to expect us to follow these stereotypes, usually also without an intention to judge us; it happens just because people before us have done it for a long time. Gender equality has been one of the main subjects of discussion in public over the past years. Therefore stereotypes about women have also been a topic of debate. One of the main stereotypes is that women should always look good, in order for them to be liked by the opposite gender. The following stereotype includes all of the grooming tools like makeup, clothes, and accessories, all of which will make you more feminine and good-looking. I have chosen makeup as an object of the breaching exercise, since I use makeup every day and can collect relevant data, in order to test the existence of the stereotype.

I use makeup every day. By now, I feel like it has become a part of my daily routine, and therefore I cannot imagine my life without it. What is more, the more you apply makeup, the more it feels like a hobby, as you upgrade your skill and can be creative with it. “Makeup to some is an art form, to others, it literally creates a livelihood” (Hari, 2016). Since makeup enhances your natural features, I truly feel like it makes me look better. Moreover, since I am good at makeup, applying it makes me feel relaxed and can lift my mood up pretty quickly. For the breaching exercise, I decided to not wear makeup for two weeks, in order to see how people react. Makeup is a symbol of femininity; hence when a woman uses it, she is supposed to be more attractive to the male gender. Therefore, I hypothesize that without makeup, a woman will not be seen as attractive, due to a stereotype, which is created around it.

To begin with, starting the experiment was hard enough for me. I am used to waking up every day with a thought in my mind that I should have time to get my makeup done. It was hard not doing it since I am so used to having this as a part of my daily life. I felt responsible for conducting this experiment, so I almost forced myself to do it. In order to make the exercise work, I only had to stop wearing makeup for some time. I decided that two weeks was enough time for people to notice the difference, so I can analyze the reactions and conclude what has been done. The people, who were the subjects to this experiment, were everyone around me. However, only the ones, who are close to me, could give me the needed feedback. As I walked down the streets, surrounded by strangers, there was almost no reaction, since everyone is busy with their lives, and do not pay attention to the people around them. However, I must mention that when I was wearing makeup, which can be considered evening makeup and has more details than my daily makeup, I noticed more attention from the opposite gender. When comparing my everyday makeup and no makeup at all, there was no difference in reactions. However, as soon as I net my friends not having any makeup on, I there was some reactions. People, whom I interact with every day, noticed that I look different. However, they were not stating this in a negative connotation. They were just surprised. What is notable is that my friends told me that they like me without makeup more than when I wear it. My experience conducting this experiment was not as perfect as I expected it to be. There was one person, who told me that I do not look good without makeup, and I should go back to wearing it. In the course of two weeks of not wearing makeup, I have noticed a lot of reactions, which helped me analyze the hypothesis.

An essential part of this breaching exercise is the reaction of the person, who conducted this experiment. In my opinion, it is one of the strongest reactions, as it can show you from your perspective, how dependent we are on the stereotypes. I, personally, felt uncomfortable not wearing makeup.  I do not feel like I have to wear it, as if the stereotype tells me to do, yet I would rather wear it since I like how it looks on me. What is more, I have never had troubles interacting with the opposite gender before I started using makeup every day, and I did not notice any difference afterward.

As a part of a breaching exercise, I decided not to wear makeup for two weeks in a row, since I use it daily, and there is a stereotype around women wearing makeup. After collecting the reactions for the period of the exercise, I can state that I have not noticed major change in the reactions of the people around me. What is more, some of the people have told me that they like me better without makeup, which negated the hypothesis. There was a person, who told me that they prefer me wearing makeup; however, it is not enough to support the hypothesis. As for me, I believe that despite being a stereotype, makeup can be something that they wear, as long as they feel like there is no pressure to do so.
