“Capitalism: A Love Story” & “American Dream” Movie Reviews

Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A love story from 4:20 to 10:24 is very similar to Barbara Kopple’s American Dream in terms of the ideological context and emotional pressure on the audience. This part of Moore’s documentary conveys how people are devastated by the economic recession and mortgage bubble that has busted. The scene focuses on the consequence of the mortgage crisis for the average Americans, who have lost their homes just because mortgage rates have become unaffordable to them anymore. The director conveys a strong sense of injustice to the audience. The same sense of injustice is clearly traced throughout the documentary American Dream by Barbara Kopple. Barbara Kopple reveals how unjust policies conducted by employers are in relation to employees and that sense of injustice is clearly traced throughout the film. As a result, the audience has a strong sympathy toward employees and unionized workers in American Dream as well as to Americans, who have lost their homes because of the mortgage crisis in Capitalism: A love story.

At the same time, the emotional impact of American Dream and the episode from Capitalism is very strong. Both directors focus on personal stories of characters of the film. They convey real life stories and the real experience of people and include the raw material to show how devastating and unjust is the impact of existing rules on people and their life. Such approach helps directors to reach a strong emotional impact on the audience and evokes a strong sympathy to people, which directors depict in their films. Therefore, the authors use emotions of the audience to convey their ideas to the audience and to persuade the audience in the righteousness of ideas conveyed by the directors in their films.
