Career Exploration Project: an Accountant

Question 1

The selected field of interest is accounting, while the specific occupation is a job of an Accountant. The typical responsibilities of an Accountant are to ensure preparation, examination and analysis of different types of accounting records, financial statements and other documentation; to provide assessment of accuracy of accounting records and conformance to the established standards; to report financial information to managers, to create tables of accounts; to provide accurate record keeping and use accounting systems based on new technological innovations, to provide assessment of taxes, tax returns and comply with the key requirements.  

The educational  training needed for an Accountant includes a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in Accounting. The knowledge of economics, statistics, business law, marketing, the key accounting principles, the financial markets and banking, auditing and taxation will help to provide analysis of financial data. Job prospects will be improved if a person has a certification within a specific field of accounting, (e.g. Certified Public Accountants).

Job outlook for this occupation is rather promising. The number of job openings is high. According to the findings provided by the Bureau of Labour Statistics, job outlook from 2014 to 2024 is expected to grow up to 11%. The growth of economy requires the growth of the number of accountants employed in practically all fields of human activity. The median wage is $68,150 per year and $32.76 per hour (Accountants and Auditors. Occupational Outlook Handbook). The number of jobs of an Accountant in 2014 was 1,332,700. As a rule, an Accountant works 40 hours per week.

Question 2

Utilizing online job posting boards, it is necessary to identify the skill sets employers are seeking for the positions in the field of accounting. The major skills required for the position of an Accountant are active listening skills, communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills, time management skills and learning skills. Moreover, an Accountant should have good technical skills in order to work with technology like accounting software, business intelligence and data analysis software, compliance software, financial analysis software, tax preparation software and others (Accountants).

Assessing my current skills, I should conclude that I have the proper skills needed for this occupation. I can use my critical thinking skills, including logical reasoning, to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the proper solutions, to draw conclusions and find the most appropriate approaches to the emerging problems. Besides, I have good listening skills which allow me understanding important information in order to make decisions. Moreover, I have technical skills which help me to use technology like computers, scanners, etc.

Question 3

The conducted information interview with  three individuals who are presently employed in the field of accounting help to assess the challenges of this occupation. These individuals are John (40), Alice (39) and Susan (35). Each of them has worked in the field of accounting for 5 years. I interviewed these individuals about their experience in the career field of interest. I conducted 30-minute conversations, which provided me an opportunity to cover the issues like industry and employer insights, job functions and others. The major purpose was to learn more about the career opportunities provided to Accountants. I prepared specific questions to guide my interviews.

  3. What advice can you give to succeed in the career of an Accountant?
  4. What is the best advice you can give a young professional who wants to succeed in this industry?
  5. Who was your mentor & how did they help you?
  6. What makes a young employee stand out above the rest?
  7. Do you recommend any extra study?
  8. How much variety would you say there is in the type of work you do?
  9. What kinds of work values attract people to your occupation? (security, income, prestige, etc.)
  10. What do you find most rewarding/least rewarding about this career field?

Question 4

Synopsis of the interview with John, Accounting Manager, business organization

John was motivated by his mother to become an Accountant. John said that his mother served as an Accountant and could share her personal experience with him. John got a Bachelor’s degree in order to find a job in the selected field. He worked 10 years in different business organizations. He gave  valuable advice how to succeed in the career of an Accountant. He states that it is necessary to continue learning in order to address the needs of the company and achieve success in professional development.  John believes that each company has its own culture, and an Accountant should demonstrate high degree of professionalism to adapt to this culture. The best advice John can give a young professional who wants to succeed in this industry is that development of the technical knowledge base allows  a young specialist to avoid any challenges in the process of work, while the implementation of the decision making, problem solving and critical thinking skills allows to deal with any complicated situations. John’s mother was his mentor. She helped John to develop the proper skills, such as learning skills, communication skills and time management skills which are critical in performing any accounting task. The field of accounting is constantly evolving and John needs professional advice to deal with problems. What makes a young employee to stand out above the rest, according to John, is to be able to adapt to changing environment in order to pursue the key organizational goals. As the roles of accounting professionals are expanding, John is well-trained to interact with other departments of the organization. He is focused on making sound decisions, using enhanced negotiation and strategic-thinking skills. He realizes that it is crucial for him to see and assess the big picture and to have a good understanding of his direct duties and responsibilities. He recommends extra study of financial reporting, management accounting and corporate finance because leaning new things allows an Accountant to keep up with the times and address the needs of the organization. The type of work done by John is to supervise three staff accountants and bear responsibility for managing the team’s performance. In this case, John uses his leaderships skills to control how the work is completed. Hence,  it is necessary to understand that an Accountant should be adapted to the environment and the type of tasks. According to John, the work values that attract people to this occupation are security, income and prestige. John finds that income is the most rewarding about his career field, while the least rewarding is monotonous nature of work. Being an Accountant seems to be boring because it involved doing tax returns, mathematics equations and other routine tasks.

Synopsis of the interview with Alice, Accountant, an accounting firm

Alice was motivated by the prospects of the selected job. She decided to be an Accountant because she wanted to achieve success in her career development. She got an Associate’s degree. Then, she attended college and earned a Bachelor’s degree. Currently, she is planning to continue accounting education in order to get a Master’s degree in Accounting. The advice she can give to succeed in the career of an Accountant is to never give up. Alice states that unqualified accountants face a number of challenges in their work because of the emergence of new technologies. It is very important to have some experience in the field of accounting in order to deal with complicated tasks. Besides, she argues that a wide variety of skills should be applied by a person to succeed in his career. The best advice she can give a young professional who wants to succeed in the industry is to develop good communication skills. Communication allows an Accountant to resolve many problems. For example, Alice uses her communication skills to complete important financial tasks, including budget preparation, financial reporting, bill paying and others and present this information to the management team in a proper way. Alice had two mentors: her boss and her colleague. They guided and assisted Alice in the early stages of her professional career. They helped her to run an accounting practice and gave her useful advice when she encountered obstacles in her career development. Alice believes that what makes a young employee to stand out above the rest in the organization is his/her desire to develop professional skills. She recommends extra study of accounting to improve knowledge and facilitate task performance. She states that the job is not boring, although some tasks are routine and do not need any changes in their implementation.  The work values that attract people to the occupation of an Accountant are stability, income and the positive effects of occupational socialization. Due to regular interactions, continuous training and teamwork, the career of an Accountant is  appealing to Alice. The most rewarding about this career field is financial stability, while the least rewarding is work overload.

Synopsis of the interview with Susan, Certified Public Accountant, financial audit company.

Susan is a Certified Public Accountant who works at the financial audit company. She was motivated by the idea to become a professional accountant when she decided to select this occupation. She was impressed by the fact that the job of an Accountant is prestigious. She wanted to be qualified and experienced in accounting in order to open her own business in the future. Susan got a Bachelor’s degree, but she made a decision to continue her education to become  a Certified Public Accountant. She is responsible for preparation and analysis of financial reports for different companies. She serves the role of an auditor of financial reports. She helps other companies to improve financial status and comply with the key rules and regulations. Susan obtained the CPA license in order to achieve high degree of professionalism in the selected field. She can give advice how to succeed in the career of an Accountant. Susan believes that personal skills play an important role in career development, including self-confidence, self-esteem, courage, patience, self-actualization, self-discipline and responsibility. The best advice she can give a young professional who wants to succeed in this industry is to remain calm in complicated situations and use logical thinking in resolving the emergent problems. Susan had several mentors: her colleagues, her supervisor and her best friends. They taught her how to resolve professional tasks, how to develop and apply time management, stress management and conflict management skills. What makes a young employee to stand out above the rest is to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities, comply with the key rules and requirements and be friendly and communicative.  Susan recommends extra study of accounting science to increase professionalism. The type of work an Accountant should do is rather complicated because it is based on the knowledge of mathematics.  Susan believes that the work values that attract people to this occupation are income and prestige which guarantee financial stability, continuous education and job satisfaction. The most rewarding about this career field is that Accountants are in demand, the least rewarding is that the job requires high concentration and attention as an Accountant works with financial records.

Question 5

Evaluating my compatibility with the profession of an Accountant, I can find many positive aspects that allow me to continue to pursue this field. I have many strengths, such as the high level of motivation, the proper personal and professional skills, the required knowledge of accounting to succeed in this career. Moreover, I really appreciate the types of tasks I will perform. Currently, I am focused on development of my time management skills which will be useful in my accounting practice.
