Child Development: the Rise of Autism Spectrum Disorder

The number of children, diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in America annually, is shocking. There is an evident increase in the diagnosis within the last several years. Although there is also an increase in offered resources, therapies and services for these children and their families, still the families, especially the parents of these children, are to face huge problems. In addition working out of the really appropriate approaches and services is possible only under the condition of adequate understanding of the real daily lives of these families and these children. Various researches have shown that the families with children with special needs are under the constant pressure and stress and this means that they need more help from the side of professionals in the sphere, as well as more resources for managing of their problems. These families need to feel more supported and cohesive. “In 2013-2014, it was reported by the National Center for Education Statistics that nearly 6.5 million children and adolescents ages 3-21 were served under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (Nascati, 2017, p. 8). Families are often compared to small communities and they need to be run efficiently every day. All children need a lot of time and care and effort, but children with special needs need more extensive care and support. Parents of children with Autism experience high levels of stress due to the disabilities of their children. This stress comes from a great number of factors. Having profound knowledge about these factors, about the major aspects of the lives of such families, could be really helpful for producing and offering them much better care and resources, which would be beneficial for each single family, as well as the society as a whole. At the moment there is still not enough research done in relation to how Autism Spectrum Disorder affects various families.
