Consequences of Divorce on Child Development Free Essay

The Effects of Divorce and New Marriage on the Psychological Health of the Child

The divorce may have extremely negative impact on the child development because they suffer from a psychological trauma caused by the separation with one of the parents and often lack the role model from the part of that parent, who has left the family after the divorce.

The study of effects and consequences of divorce on children may involve the correlational study that compares the development of children from divorced and married families. Children living with their married, biological parents consistently have better physical, emotional, and academic well-being (). In contrast, children, who suffer the divorce of their parents, often experience emotional insecurity, underperform at school, suffer decreased social and psychological maturation, and other issues. These problems are caused by the traumatic effect caused by the separation with either parent and the lack of the proper model from the part of that parent children can learn from. As a result, they cannot adapt the proper behavior patterns and they cannot learn those behavior patterns from the part of the absent parent. The absence of the parent deprives the child of an opportunity to expand his/her social and psychological experience of having a different role model compared to the role model provided by a single parent the child is growing up with.

The remarriage of parents, when they decide to remarry once again may be a confounding variable that may influence outcomes of the study and affect the child development. Similarly, a new marriage may also interfere and influence the child development. Either the new marriage is successful or not, the new marriage is still likely to influence the child development either in positive or negative way. A successful marriage is likely to help the child to cope with problems caused by separation of his/her biological parents, while an unsuccessful marriage is likely to cause serious psychological and cognitive problems in the child development.
