Introduction

The continuous improvement planning process is aimed identifying needs and implementing effective, innovative, and collaborative strategies in order to increase student learning and achievement. There are several steps that should be implemented to achieve positive outcomes, including learning steps, leading steps and serving steps. According to researchers, “our society demands schools that produce students with the complex intellectual skills that are needed by the knowledge society, but missing in too many of their graduates”(McLaughlin & Talbert, 2006, p. 1). The continuous improvement plan can help to improve student learning and achievement through effective leadership practices.

Learning steps

In the learning stage of continuous improvement planning, due attention is paid to the interview with school stakeholders in order to gather the proper information to first identify needs, and then identify an effective, innovative, and collaborative action that is intended to increase student learning and achievement. The following problems have been reported: the increased dropout rate, poor parent and family engagement, conflicts between students caused by bullying, and poor technical assistance. School stakeholders have reported that the school climate is positive, but some weaknesses in management and leadership practices require improvements. In general, the school’s standards-based curriculum is aligned with the Core Standards and assessments. However, it is necessary to ensure flexibility in various areas of curriculum to meet the needs of all students, including students with disabilities, gifted and talented students, culturally and linguistically diverse students and economically disadvantaged students.

Leading steps

In the leading stage of continuous improvement planning, there is a need for formulating a theory of action informed by a global perspective sensitive to issues of diversity in order to ensure others’ participation in the action and to further the mission of helping students reach their God-given potential. It would be appropriate to enhance school policies aimed at dropout prevention, enhancement of parent and family engagement and prevention of conflicts between students caused by bullying and improvement of technical assistance. It is necessary to invite parents and families to participate in various school activities and programs. External technical assistance is essential for school improvement efforts (Bernhardt, 2013; Bryk et al., 2010).

Continuous Improvement Plan Project

  1. Conducting a needs assessment;
  2. Identifying needs based on the needs assessment;
  3. Creating a plan of action to focus on critical needs;
  4. Implementing the plan of action, monitoring and adjusting, if necessary.

Serving Steps

Examining the effectiveness of the action determined in the Learning and Leading steps of the Continuous Improvement Plan, it is necessary to consider the degree to which the chosen action is not only affective, but also replicable and sustainable. Utilizing steps taken in the Learning and Leading steps, it is necessary complete the following:

  1. Take action (It is necessary to use questionnaire survey in order to learn the key problems faced by the school and identify the key needs. It is possible to conduct regular evaluations to ensure support for school improvement actions).
  2. Analyze data (The analysis of data shows that the school needs improvement in certain areas, including coordinated and comprehensive services provided by school personnel)
  3. Revise theory of action (the theory of action could be improved significantly to address current school needs)
  4. Plan future action (it is very important to develop effective discipline plan and relevant procedures that could foster equity and a respect for diversity in school)
  5. Report and share results (it is necessary to organize a meeting in order to report and share the results of actions implemented in school setting).

Conclusion

Thus, it is necessary to conclude that continuous improvement planning process is complicated. An effective continuous improvement plan affects leadership structure and requires effective evaluation of results. The implementation of a well-developed continuous improvement plan guarantees positive outcomes not only in student leaning and achievement, but also in professional development as certain roles and responsibilities could be reinforced.
