“Coping Strategies of Taiwanese University Students as Predictors of English Language Anxiety” Article Review

In the article entitled “Coping strategies of Taiwanese University Students as Predictors of English Language Anxiety”, researchers Po-Chi and Craigie explored the coping strategies that could predict anxiety about learning English as a foreign language. The participants of the study included 120 Taiwanese university students. They were asked to complete the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale and the Foreign Language Anxiety Coping Scale in order to give clear and comprehensive responses regarding their personal experiences in the selected area. The research findings proved the fact that the coping strategy widely used by students involved in the study of English as a foreign language and experienced anxiety during this process was positive thinking. Researchers found that the use of positive thinking as a coping strategy allows predicting what affects the lower level of foreign language learning anxiety. The results of the study helped to determine the contribution of resignation to the higher levels of foreign language learning anxiety compared with other coping strategies (Po-Chi & Craigie, 2013).

Actually, this research study is replicable because other researchers can conduct the same type of study in order to receive the results similar to the original ones. In other words, it is possible to employ the same research methods and draw relevant conclusions on the sufficiency of the study system. In addition, the study is valid because researchers Po-Chi and Craigie selected the proper  design and the methods of research. Data collection methods are valid as the research findings represent the phenomenon that should be measured. Researchers provide valid claims, supported by reliable evidence.

Finally, my opinion of the study is positive. I believe that in their study,  researchers Po-Chi and Craigie managed to provide much important information on the significance of coping strategies to deal with the challenges in learning foreign languages. Considering the identified components of foreign language learning anxiety, namely communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation, it is possible to determine the most effective coping strategies among the following ones: preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and resignation.
