Educational Programs For Low-Income & Immigrant Families

The government support of education is crucial today because many children have limited access to education. This is why such programs as No Child Left Behind act and Ensuring Success for Migrant Students are particularly important because they open the way for many students to education. These programs aim students from low-income and immigrant families mainly. The federal government support is crucial for education that makes local states and education departments dependent on the federal government support. As a result, the education at the local level grows more and more dependent on the federal government. This is why instructions have to match national standards of education that raises the problem of taking into consideration local diversities and specificities. In a long run, the increased involvement of the federal government will lead to the centralization of the US education system with the introduction of common standards along with the elimination of existing diversity.

In such a situation, immigrant students are in a particularly difficult position because they have to adapt to the new cultural and social environment and start learning in the US. The enhancement of the role of the federal government in education contributes to the inclusion of immigrant students into education process through federal government programs. On the other hand, these programs fail to take into consideration local specificities and needs of immigrant students. Having access to education is definitely positive for immigrant students but they have different needs in different communities, while the federal government fails to take into consideration those differences. Therefore, the federal government should focus on the development of flexible policies.
