“Government Surveillance, Neoliberal Citizenship, & Social Adentity” Article Review

R. Petcu in his article Government surveillance, neoliberal citizenship, and social identity focuses on the problem of the increased role of the government and its surveillance over citizens, which the author believes to be offensive with regard to human rights. The author suggests the introduction of constitutional changes that would limit the government unreasonable power to survey citizens and increase the overall power of the government in the country, where the people are the only source of power. The necessity of the introduction of regulations of government policies derives from the current situation and the government policy oriented on the enhancement of surveillance. Such policy is justified by numerous threats to the national security. However, the author argues that such policy contradicts to democratic principles. This is why he suggests introducing the regulation and limitation of the government power in terms of imposing government control over citizens through surveillance and other policies and techniques. Therefore, surveillance is the oppressive policy conducted by the government and the constitutional regulation can prevent the government from the misuse of its power to keep people under its control.
