Is It Important to Be Open Minded in the Workplace?

How do you think you are perceived by colleagues? Please mention 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses.

In today’s business environment, different people develop different attitudes towards others around them. The way people behave, communicate, express their emotions, or interact within specific environment can make a powerful impact on other people’s perceptions and feelings about you, your personal self-value, and behaviour. Within working environment, employees have always developed specific thoughts and feeling about other colleagues they collaborate with. Specific traits, features, personal values and appreciations, beliefs and characteristics can make a powerful impact on how others perceive you. Despite “little” negative things, words, or behaviours of other people, I’ve always tried to develop positive perceptions and feelings about other individuals around me. This positive environment and positive perceptions about others helps me to avoid conflict situations, negative attitudes, misunderstanding, and errors at work. I think that our co-workers can make a powerful impact on our productivity, behaviours, communication, self-esteem, and a sense of self-value within organization. When it concerns my own self, I believe that I am perceived as a logical, opened minded, and solution orientated person.

Being logical is my first quality. I’ve always tried to give my best to all tasks that I need to complete. I keep my team motivated by ensuring they are always aware of the bigger picture and how each of them has contributed towards one common goal. My logical behaviours and perceptions help me to identify the colleagues’ inner strengths and weaknesses, their abilities and inner potential, their intentions and attitudes about work or employment in general. I think I am perceived by colleagues as a logically minded person as they often tell me about my ability to avoid conflict situations, good decision making qualities, and an ability to predict potential pitfalls and weak sides. Many colleagues tell me about my strong mental capacity and logic abilities, which help me to avoid negative behaviours, negative emotions, unhappiness and dissatisfaction with specific situations. My colleagues also consider that my logically minded personality often makes positive contribution into our working environment and helps to achieve good end results.

Being open minded person is another good quality of mine. Open minded person at work can be crucially important within working environment, which may positively affect interactions between colleagues, business intentions, communication, productivity, relationships, and working climate in general. Evidence indicates that “when managers and employees don’t keep an open mind, the work environment can be poisoned by biases and intolerance, leading to miscommunication and mistakes.” (thenest.com) I think colleagues perceive me as open minded individual, who helps to maintain good relationships at work, enhance harmony, support positive emotional balance and well-being among colleagues of different  cultures, backgrounds, and personal life experiences. I think open minded employees are essential for positive changes and progress within working environment.

Finally, I consider colleagues perceive me as a solution oriented individual, who has an ability to handle changes and stressful situations and avoid misunderstanding about specific tasks and requirements. Solution oriented thinking at work can bring multiple positive contributions within working environment, increase the employees’ critical thinking abilities, solve specific problems and issues, and easily go through challenges and pitfalls. I think colleagues perceive me as a solution oriented person because of my ability to respond to existing problems in an absolutely different way and “intelligently” move towards solutions and positive outcomes. I’ve always tried to perform in accordance with systematic and strategic vision and encourage collaborative approach. Thus, I think my solution orientated approach to matters significantly helps me to handle change, achieve good results, make a difference, and avoid conflict situations and misunderstanding at work. So, my core strengths are logical behaviour, open mind, and solution oriented approach.

When it comes to my weaknesses, I think I am perceived by colleagues as impatient, strong willed individual, who is not able to take criticism adequately. My impatience has always ruined my plans, intentions, and choices along my life and career path. I think because of my impatience I’ve lost a number of opportunities and chances in life; impatience often negatively impacts my relationships with mates and co-workers too. I think my colleagues perceive me as impatient individual because of my anxiety, emotional disbalance, and behaviours in stressful situations. My impatience can increase the risks of conflicts with colleagues and reduce control over my personal behaviour, communication, and attitudes toward other people around. Recently, I began to learn to control my impatience by determining factors that may contribute to its development and balancing personal emotions and feelings. Researchers and psychological experts explain that patience is one of the most valuable qualities in achieving success at work. While working with other colleagues it is crucially important to stay calm, control personal emotions, feelings and behaviours. I think my impatience often negatively affect the climate within organization, organizational culture, and interactions with other employees. I strive to get rid of this “weakness” and develop emotional well-being and control over my own feelings and emotions.

Because of my inability to change personal vision or idea, many colleagues perceive me as a strong willed individual who does not want to be led. This quality prevents me from taking into consideration colleagues’ opinions, considerations, and individualities. I always want to be heard; my colleagues consider that I possess a sense of high self control and self-worth, which often negatively contribute towards achieving common goal at work. My “strong willed” weakness often causes little “disasters” at work but if I start to control my emotions and take others’ opinions into consideration my chances to achieve positive outcome may increase. My strong willed individuality prevents me from listening the colleagues’ ideas and decision objectively and makes me to ignore the ideas of other employees as well. My colleagues perceive me as a strong willed person who enjoys being a hero in colleagues’ eyes and ignores what other people’s wants, considerations, and choices. Through the last months, I’ve started to work on this weakness and hope to achieve positive outcomes in the future.

Finally, my inability to take criticism well is another major weakness that often makes a negative impact on my relationships with co-workers, productivity, collaboration, and organizational culture in general. Because of my high self-esteem and a sense of self-worth, my colleagues perceive me as someone is not able to take criticism adequately. I consider critique as something destructive, something that can ruin my personal intentions, beliefs, and goals. In some situation, critique can be harmful and lead to negative outcomes and perceptions. But in business environment, it is essential to develop a “healthy approach” about criticism, especially when it concerns our personal self. I realize that emotionally intelligent individuals should know how to respond to criticism and handle criticism “wisely”. I learn to eliminate my inability to take criticism well and instead being reactive, begin to perceive criticism in helpful, “intelligent”, and constructive way.

All of us have their own strengths and weaknesses. Specific traits, features, personal values and appreciations, beliefs and characteristics can make a powerful impact on how other people perceive us. When it comes to my weaknesses, I am perceived by colleagues as impatient, strong willed individual, who is not able to take criticism adequately; but I learn to transform my weak sides into strengths. When it comes to my strengths, I believe that I am perceived as a logical, opened minded and solution orientated person. I’ve always tried to help people and do my best to all tasks and goals that I need to complete.
