“Luna Gale” Play Review

The play that I would like to write about is titled “Luna Gale”. I saw it on Capital Stage. It is an independent theater in Sacramento. As for the pre-show ambiance, one should note that I could feel that people were willing to see the play. The theater is located in a relatively small building. However, there is plenty of room inside for the people to attend. The lobby is not particularly big nonetheless. The audience included primary people from 25 to 35. While the majority were dressed casually, it was obvious that many carefully thought through their outfit. The music that was played prior to the show was ordinary pop music that one can hear on the radio all the time. There was nothing special about it. The play was a part of the program of the theater for that month. As for the show, it was very high-quality: everything about it was professional, ranging from the props to acting. It was clear that there has been a lot of preparation. Rebecca Gilman, the author, is a contemporary American playwright that tackles various hot-topic issues: racism, mixed identity, and others. This was the story about child protection and tolerance of excessive faith. The genre was a conventional play in five acts. There were intermissions between then. The story is quite simple: Caroline, a middle-aged social worker, has to take care of a couple of drug addict young adult parents who have a six-month-old daughter. She decided to hand her to their mother temporarily so that they will be able to fight their addiction. However, the mother insists on permanent adoption and is pressing Caroline to agree to that using her religious beliefs. It is clear that the playwright wanted to show that not only drugs can distort mind of a person. This was done very proficiently as the conflict in the play is really interesting. It was worth doing because excessive faith can be as harmful to the people as drug addiction. The actors were particularly skillful: they did their best on stage and made the characters come to life. The emotions that they showed were genuine: there was nothing artificial about them. The communication among the characters as also natural; however, it seems that the more experienced actors played better than their less experienced counterparts. It is clear that the play was particularly entertaining because it made people reflect on what is going on in the society at the moment. The actors used their voice to draw the attention of the people to the content of the play: thus, Caroline had a very clear and confident voice that made people believe that she was able to handle the situation. The design elements tried to imitate the interior of ordinary buildings. This was achieved quite well. The lighting also was set very well: every detail of the set was clearly visible. If one considers the sound of the production, one should note that not many ambient sounds were used in the course of it. However, certain sound effects contribute to the authenticity of the experience. Overall, the set was well made: even though not many elements were used, it created the illusion of an independent world fully. As for the costumes, they were casual clothes, but each of them reflects the character of the hero. For example, Caroline was wearing formal clothes while the young parents were dressed in shabby clothes.

Overall, I liked the play very much: it allowed me to see the problem in question from a new perspective and enabled me to think about the influence of drugs and religion on the people.
