My Own Definition of “Culture”

Howerever different people may be on Earth, they all have one common wealth – culture, which reflects their origins and lifestyles, beliefs and ideas, transformations and achievements. Culture enables and reflects all aspects of human development and inspires humanity to grasp the beauty of the whole to enrich their national heritage and history. Of course, the term “culture” significantly varies across time and place, and every society impresses with something new and unique, but on the whole, the meaning of culture is based on common aspects, theories, and rules. The definition of “culture” means the social heritage of one certain group of people characterized by special features and beliefs, symbols and language, organizations and certain assumptions, discoveries, creativities, and arts. Additionally, each culture encompasses social behaviors and special norms, unique skills and knowledge, certain attitudes and motifs. For most of the researchers, culture has become one of the most misunderstood components of human development. As evidence shows, “current understandings and practices of culture are complex, located at the intersection of economic and social justice agendas.” (Yúdice, 2007) Throughout the centuries, scientists strive to set a connection between culture, history, and environments, but the meaning of culture significantly varies across disciplines, which make it difficult to find clear interpretations regarding the concepts of culture. Yúdice in his article states that the term “culture” is characterized by three dimensions, such as “intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic development; the way of life of a people, group, or humanity in general; and the works and practices of intellectual and artistic activity…” (Yúdice, 2007) But I think, no matter what may influence or transform the concepts of culture, the one thing is certain – culture is more than just a set of beliefs, norms, and customs of a particular society. To me, culture itself means a magnificent historical phenomenon, a whole way of life, displaying features and certain characteristics that have evolved over the centuries.
