“Public Diplomacy Comes of Age” by C. Ross Article Review

The first part of the article presents the fact that in recent years, a whole world is increasingly spoken and written about the need to intensify the public diplomacy. Thus, the author of the article demonstrates the fact that such a task is of the great importance for the country’s leadership, explaining the meaning of the term of “public diplomacy,” as well as showing the global changes which are affecting public diplomacy in contemporary society.

The author puts a specific attention to the way how people communicate with each other, and shows the readers that to communicate properly is a kind of specific art which influences on people thoughts and minds, allowing them to achieve cultural understanding. Presenting the idea that U.S. public diplomacy must be able to build a strong support for both U.S. society and its policy, the author uses a lot of historical facts for illustration, and also proves the necessity to involve the government in this process because only government is powerful enough to solve existing problems in the area of public diplomacy. Moreover, Ross puts an emphasis on the statement that educational and cultural exchange programs are very important parts of public diplomacy due to their innovative character and ability to form better future to existing generations.

To conclude, summing up the information presented in the article it becomes understandable that diplomacy has become inherent in the variety of forms, as evidenced by the ever-increasing role of public diplomacy, which, along with traditional diplomacy defends the public interest and ensure national security. The growing influence of public diplomacy is accompanied by important trends: globalization and development of information technologies, which connect countries, cultures and society by complex and unprecedented mechanisms.
