Reflection On Movie “Rebound: The Legend of Earl ‘The Goat’ Manigault”

There are a lot of movies about sport, about sport stars, about their successes and failures. Among them one of the really outstanding movies is “Rebound – The Legend of Earl ‘The Goat’ Manigault.” This is a story about everything, about sport, about good will, about failures, about success, about humanism, about life itself.

There plot of the movie is not intricate, however there is a wish to watch it till the end. The main hero of the movie is Earl “The Goat” – he was one of the most outstanding and brilliant basketball players, who probably had no chance to enjoy his fame in the way – other basketball starts usually do. However it is difficult not to trust the words of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who admitted that Earl “The Goat” was one of the best players, he had ever met.

Rebound: The Legend of Earl “The Goat” is a story about the life of The Goat, about the meaning of his rebounding from addiction, returning to more or less normal life, loosing however one of the most important things in life – time. This movie could not be called a real drama probably, but the events and the main character are still in a way dramatized. Don Cheadle plays the role of Harlem street-ball famous player Earl Manigault. This story is a real story of the legendary basketball player, who was the best in the streets of New York, some critics even assume that he was one of the best basketball players, who didn’t manage to enter the professional stage of this game.

The movie starts from the scene, revealing the young guy – Earl – playing on the court, it is already late at night and there is no audience for him, apart of a couple of drug hustlers – Legrand and his friend. Earl tries to make a slam drunk, doesn’t manage to do it because of the obstacle caused by the rim. His viewers smile and leave, finding no further interest in watching such player. The next moment, when the camera goes down, the viewers have the chance to see how Earl turns up the bottom of his worn out jeans in order to take off his leather lace-up ankle weight. This episode is important for transmitting of the major message of the movie – be patient, be devoted, be strong and never give up.

The story of the young boy is further told in a form of a life chronicle, showing how a young dreamer is turned into one of the best high-school players, if not the only best one. He is the leader in his Benjamin Franklin team and there are a couple of steps, remaining before taking part in the city championship game, which should be played against his major rival – Lew Alcindor, who was later famous under the name – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The result is unexpected – Earl is expelled from the team for smoking marijuana. What was the reason for this? It is not easy to answer, maybe he was not serious and responsible – this is not evident from the way he treats his favorite game. Maybe because he was an orphan and there was no caring and supporting parents, who would constantly find the necessary words for him. Or maybe because everybody has the right for mistake, but unfortunately, it is necessary to pay for this mistake earlier or later. This is what happens to the main hero, he never gets the chance to enter a good college, although before there were wide perspectives for him, he didn’t manage to become a professional basketball player, although he seemed to have a real talent, still it is not possible to call his life a complete waste – he fought his battle against despair and degradation and won it.
