- Introduction
In this study, researchers are asking the question that concerns specific characteristics of rural areas that affect the access of mental health services by families with children diagnosed with emotional disorders. What set the stage for their research study are the challenges faced by residents of rural areas which include poor transportation, stigma, increased isolation, high rate of poverty, lack of sufficient service delivery, and others. The major goal of the study is to explore the key barriers to engagement of families in the system of care specially developed for children with emotional disorders to contribute to improvement of quality of service delivery in rural areas.
- Method
Researchers used a community based participatory design that required participants (8 family caregivers and 9 staff members) to be involved in the specially developed program. The dependent variable was the rate of engagement of families in service delivery.
- Results
The major findings in this study are few: first, the key barriers to service delivery in rural areas include stigma, financial problems, lack of the proper resources to ensure high quality care, and territorial distance; and second, care services are improved by the growth of word of mouth practices and the availability of personalized service providers.
- Personal Reflection
I believe that the issue discussed in this article is an acute public health issue because the quality of service delivery affects the health of the entire nation. The fact that rural areas fail to provide access to care services for families with children diagnosed with emotional disorders means that the government policies are ineffective and should be reviewed to address the needs of rural residents. I think that the specific characteristics of rural areas should be considered by policy-makers and healthcare providers while making decisions on selection of the proper methods of coordination and collaboration to ensure high quality care delivery. In other words, the needs of rural residents should be addressed through collaborative efforts of relevant agencies.
