Technology Boom in “Generation Wired” Article Review

In her article, “Generation Wired,” Emily Listfield claims that technology boom has brought both positive and negative aspects of people’s lives. Children are the most vulnerable population because their world perception is still developing. Most of them do not have their own opinion regarding what is good and what is bad. Listfield says “In a world where sexting is on the nightly news, plagiarism is just a Wikipedia click away, and people have hundreds of online friends they’ve never met, helping your kids make smart choices has never been more crucial” (Listfield, para. 4). I totally agree with the author, as modern children are under significant risk to get in troubles. Internet takes away person’s privacy. We have become more vulnerable by using social platforms, sharing our ideas and photos. People who want to seem cool can make you an object of bully by leaving sarcastic or offensive comments on your page. Cyberbullying is a sharp social problem as it often leads to devastating consequences. Parents must protect their children by explaining what is right and wrong. This must be done sitting in front of a computer as the new ‘wired generation’ perceives information better only in this way.

Emily Listfield has also discussed the problem of game addiction in children. She states that almost every child aged 8-18 plays computer games. Almost nine percent of them can be diagnosed as game addicted. Listfield states that “Parents are right to worry about the violent content of some games, but they should be just as concerned about the amount of time kids spend playing even benign offerings” (Listfield, para. 12). I agree with the writer entirely on the point that spending too much time in front of the computer children lose valuable efforts and hours they could efficiently use while studying their homework. Moreover, passive lifestyle makes children obese and overweight. Their posture is getting worse. Their muscles and heart do not get trained. In such a way ‘the wired generation’ risks to grow into a group of adults with multiple health disorders. Thus, in future, the government will pay more to solve the health issues of those people.
