The Problem Of Slavery In American Society In “The Emancipation of Abe Lincoln” Article Review

The article The Emancipation of Abe Lincoln is devoted to an utterly important historical event – namely signing of the document, which had strong impact upon the problem of slavery in American society. The author of the article makes it clear to the readers that it is not correct to perceive emancipation as a single event, because this was a process, which needed certain time, effort and environment conditions. There were numerous causes, which influenced this decision and a lot of individuals in various spheres had to work over it. As soon as the Civil War was over, the issues of black people – former slaves, became even more acute and controversial. Although the meaning of the Emancipation Proclamation could for sure not be underestimated, it was often misunderstood. This is a mistake to think that one signature of Lincoln made four millions of slaves free at one single moment; neither could this proclamation mean the complete end of slavery in America. To those lands, which were under the Confederate control, this document could not be applied. At the same time this document was the first serious sign of the coming abolishment of slavery, as an unacceptable practice for any strong country.

Lincoln was himself under the impact of this document and his views concerning slavery were changing. This document was the first step to identify black people as just men and women and not somebody’s property. Another important step was acceptance of black people to the army, as before it was not allowed, still those 200.000 black men, who could serve in the Army, made serious contribution into the whole victory of the Union. Lincoln provided the chance for freed slaves to work in order to earn money for their lives. The role of the emancipation document was great for the whole history of the country and at the same time it caused numerous other controversies and questions in this relation.
