“The Geography of Bliss” By Eric Weiner Brief Book Review

In his book The Geography of Bliss Eric Weiner describes his personal experience of travelling through more than 30 countries. His book is a wit, informative and well-written description of the person’s journey who investigates new countries and makes an attempt to find the recipe of happiness. The book is a description of personal experience and readers see the counties through the author’s description.

Weiner is a master of descriptive writing. He creates vivid and bright pictures and makes readers live through his sensations and emotions. The author demonstrates a skillful use of artistic means which help him reach his goals. Descriptive details make the narration alive and interesting. Readers do not only get information about the country, but also get the glimpse of experience of the person who has visited it. Descriptive details help Weiner reproduce objects and images and pass them to the reader. These details appeal to our sensory experience and the author uses them skillfully. He makes the readers not distanced observers, but the participants of the events and experiences he writes about. For example, in his description of darkness, he makes the readers feel his emotions:”I find myself pondering darkness, something I admit I haven’t pondered much in the past. For me, as I suspect for most people, dark has always been dark… Some darkness is. hard and unforgiving. Other darkness is softened by the glow of the moon or distant city lights. Then there is the expectant darkness of 5: oo a.m., when we sense though can’t yet see the coming dawn” (Weiner 142).  When reading these lines we perceive author’s experience, not information. This effect is achieved through the rich use of metaphors and descriptive details.  Eric Weiner, as a magician, creates reality for his readers and makes them live in it while they are reading his book.
