“The Hospital Of the Future” Article Review

Modern world could be characterized by rapid development and introduction of computer and communication technologies, which have significant impact upon all life spheres. Medicine is absolutely not an exception. Michelle Andrews in his article The Hospital Of the Future offers his views upon the potential transformations and changes, which are going to take place in the sphere of medicine and health care. These changes would be meaningful for both medical personnel and patients. The key idea of the author is that the major change in medicine would be related to automating of most processes and sooner or later robots would occupy their strong positions in surgery rooms and by the patients. A lot of attention is paid by the author to the development of telemedicine, as there are already some technologies, which allow doctors perform some activities remotely, without making the patients visit them. For example there are special devices, which help to control blood pressures and weight gain by some patients with chronic problems. Before they had to remain at hospitals for the medical personnel to control their states, now there is no need to do it. Secondly, robots will be applied in surgery, because robots’ “hands” are steadier and the variety of actions, which they can perform, is much wider in comparison to humans. An important aspect is records reform. Medical staff had always had to do piles of paper work, which is unnecessary today and in the future all the records could be kept not only in databases by hospitals, but also in special individual chips of the patients. One of the most surprising observations of the author is about room change. Usually not enough attention is paid to the actual environment of patients, whereas there are enough facts, proving that surrounding design and comfort do have positive impact upon the process of medical treatment. Overall, this article is clear and informative and with adequate research basis.
