The Meaning of the Statement “There is No Frigate Like a Book”

“There is no frigate like a book” is a unique statement that defines human personality and values. Books help people to learn more about life and about themselves. If a person compares a book with a frigate, he/she adores reading. A frigate is a sailing warship. It is possible to use a book for unreal voyages in the world of literature. These voyages are beneficial to the reader as they allow to obtain personal experience based on the discussed themes. Thesis statement: A book helps a person to learn many new things not only about the role of values, traditions and beliefs, but also about the meaning of human life.

All the stories I have read can be used as a guide in my decision making and problem solving processes. The actions of the characters, their behaviours and decisions make me draw relevant conclusions on how to deal with good and evil. I try to discover new ideas, apply them to current situations and find what should be done to make my life more meaningful.

In fact, books provide valuable examples of human vices, such as cruelty, ignorance and responsibility.  In the short story “The Lottery” by Shrly Jackson, due attention is paid to description of human values, traditions and beliefs. The main character Tessie was stoned to death by the townspeople because they blindly followed the established traditions and did not  think of the negative consequences. Tessie did not oppose the mob’s decision. Instead, she bemoaned the unjust decision put an end to her life (Jackson, 2008).

Actually, books allow the reader to learn more about the meaning of human life. Practically any book demonstrates human vices and teaches to respond to the challenges faced by people. In the short story “The Lottery”, Jackson want the reader to value human life and avoid making stupid decisions.

Thus, it is necessary to conclude that the statement “There is no frigate like a book” can help to re-evaluate one’s attitude toward reading. Reading books is critical to development of personal views on important issues. Books help people to make life more interesting and meaningful.
