Why Do So Many People Smoke

Given the fact that there is no longer a debate that tobacco is harmful to your health, why do so many people smoke? Everyone knows and it is not a secret that smoking brings multiple negative effects on human physical and emotional health. The use of tobacco causes a number of chronic illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis, etc. Different categories of population starting from adults, both men and women, young individuals, teenagers, and ending with the elderly and even pregnant women can possess this negative smoking habit or even smoke regularly, which often lead to negative health outcomes for consumers and those around them. I consider there are some reasons about why so many people, especially young individuals, smoke. The most common reasons/purposes of smoking are addiction, peer pressure, stress relief, for pleasure, or social situations. Addiction is one of the reasons about smoking. Tobacco products are very addictive and many people just cannot quit their smoking habit. Many people have already used other drugs like alcohol or marijuana, which only increase their desire to smoke. Many young people want to be cool and fit in popular culture, thus they start smoking and do not think about negative outcomes. Additionally, peer pressure plays one of the core roles in teenager’s smoking habit. Many individuals believe that smoking can lead to weight loss, thus, despite tobacco harmful effect they continue to use tobacco products to “stay in shape”. Personality traits can also influence on the individual’s smoking habit; for people with low self-esteem, low sense of self-worth, or poor identity, it can be very difficult to quit smoking; for them smoking even gives confidence. Many individuals smoke to eliminate stress, anxiety, or fear, while others smoke for pleasure or in other social situations like partying, socializing with friends, going to certain places, etc.
