Cyberstalking Essay

The progress in the field of computer technologies and IT has undoubtedly added essential convenience to everybody’s daily lives and gave humanity access to unlimited amounts of information on the Internet; however, this freedom could not possibly be unflawed. As a consequence, the number of hackers and cyberstalkers, seeking vengeance on their exes and foes, started to increase right from the start of the computer era up until nowadays.

The term of the cyberstalking could be defined as the actions, directed on the persuasion, threatening or hacking the personal information of a particular individual or a group of people on the Internet. The victim of the cyber-harassment and hacking could become unconditionally any user from an Internet celebrity to a person, who seldom uses Facebook or e-mail; mainly due to the fact of the Internet anonymity and, as mentioned earlier, almost absolute freedom of speech and choice. As the Bureau of Justice Statistics confirms, approximately quarter of the cyberstalking victims (1 of the four victims) reported being stalked at the e-mail messages (83%) or instant messaging services (35%) in 2009 (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2009). On top of that, 46% of the interviewed victims of cyberstalking confessed in feeling anxiety, fear of the sensitive personal information leak or not knowing what happened with their accounts (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2009). Just like that, the represented statistics verify that the people, who experienced cyberstalking, are more likely to develop the symptoms of depression, anxiety, paranoia or even PTSD.

Concluding everything analyzed earlier, it could surely be said that cyberstalking is an international and actual issue of the nowadays Internet system. Intruding of people’s privacy, hacking and leaking personal information into the Internet, getting threats, different kinds of unsolicited messages online and many other forms of cyberstalking serve as an essential threat to the Internet users’ safety, and surely enough, must be terminated, or at least reduced.
