We all have our own ideas and opinions about oceans, their development, and their global influences today. Oceans play a core role in the life and development of our planet as everything on earth strongly depends on waters. However different places on Earth may be all of them are closely connected with water sources. Oceans continue to make a strong impact on the Earth’s climate, weather, temperature changes, ecosystems, nature cycles, energy transformation, and the air we breathe. As evidence shows, humanity knows very little about the oceans. People continue to shape and be shaped by global climate changes that in its turn significantly affect marine environment and marine ecosystems. Researchers and ecologists claim that deep ocean exploration plays a fundamental role in discovering unknown phenomenons, which may help humanity to solve hot issues regarding environmental changes and improve the overall planet’s life and further global development. The beauty of the ocean world attracted so many scientists who came that they did not want to give up. Nowadays, more and more people want to explore the ocean to understand unusual things, discover certain mysteries and oceanic secrets, and find unexpected solutions to answer a number of hot questions. Ecologists, biologists, geologists, historians, and other scientific specialists strive to discover something new and unique about marine world, learn about chemical patterns, explore archeological aspects, and analyze deep oceanic ecosystems, which allow them to make effective decisions, scientific predictions and successful experiments. Today, deep ocean exploration becomes crucially important as it may give humanity more opportunities, more intelligent tools, new sources, and more significant deep-water discoveries, which can help us to better understand the potential environmental changes and possible future conditions, analyze the dynamics of our planet, its history, and its past, improve human health and treat certain diseases, predict possible natural hazards and disasters, and finally, respond appropriately and manage effectively the existing issues to secure our nature and the Earth’s beauty for future generations to enjoy.

Exploring the unknown, discovering places where no one visited before are among the most common human desires. Ocean is a perfect environment where a person has an opportunity to observe multiple unique corners, explore certain artifacts, pick into original hooks and deep-water crannies, and make unique discoveries about deep sea world. Oceanography becomes a rapidly changing, dynamic discipline. Today, “wider concerns about the ocean, and growing awareness of its significance in the Earth’s past, present and future, and in the origin and maintenance of life, have helped to create a more general interest in such a work, beyond the immediate scientific community actively engaged in research.” (Deacon, et al., 1) As evidence shows, in the oceanic environment there are multiple remote places and corners, which remain untouched by humanity. Statistics indicate that over 95 percent of the ocean is still unexplored. But what is ocean exploration? According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “ocean exploration is discovery through disciplined, diverse observations and recordings of findings. It includes rigorous, systematic observations and documentation of biological, chemical, physical, geological, and archeological aspects of the ocean in the three dimensions of space and in time.” (National Research Council, 11) The ocean plays a core role in shaping the climate zones on our planet. Global ocean system significantly affects the lands and the coastline territories that in its turn influence temperature regulations on the planet. Deep ocean exploration can explain the potential environmental changes on earth and the possible future conditions of our planet. Weather and climate significantly depends on oceans, thus researchers continue to explore the deep seas to receive a global perspective on the climate of our planet. Through different methodological and strategic approaches, engineering solutions, and technological innovations scientists learn the complexity of the ocean and its relation to climate patterns, collect data about deep ocean areas, and put it into practice explaining energy transformation, the concepts of global warming, significant temperature changes, and even geological processes, which help to predict potential dangers and natural hazards on earth.

Throughout the centuries, scientists have explored life in the deep waters, analyze bacteria, chemicals, and complex organisms, explore tectonic plate areas and tried to find a connection between oceanic changes and geological processes on our planet. The development of innovative deep-sea machines and other technologies have promoted a better understanding of the ocean landscape, which helped researchers to develop in-depth analysis of the ocean diversity and environment that may reduce potential dangers of earthquakes, tsunamis, and other hazards, eliminate various types of contamination, and avoid possible threats to human safety. Recently, the researchers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered an innovative concept of acoustic gravity waves that help predict the potential dangers of tsunami. These acoustic-gravity waves “are fast-moving, long sound waves that travel deep across the ocean at the speed of sound” (techtimes.com). As evidence shows, “when two surface-gravity waves travelling towards one another are moving at different frequencies, the waves’ interaction can give off nearly 95 percent of their original energy as an acoustic wave, which can travel deeper and much faster than the two surface-gravity waves.” (techtimes.com) In other words, these two waves exchange energy sources and often produce additional wave, which causes so-called “wave interaction” anywhere in the deep ocean. Scientists have used the waves as “an innovative alarm system” and developed a number of methodological approaches that can help professionally predict potential dangers of tsunami, avoid threats, and increase human safety.

Deep ocean exploration is also critical to human health. New marine bacteria, deep-water organisms, and bio-agents helped scientists and medical experts produce valuable medicine and antibiotics to treat a number of serious disorders and illnesses, including cancer. As evidence shows, “the “Rasta” sponge, discovered a few miles off the Florida Keys in early 2000, contains an antitumor agent used to treat cancer.” (National Research Council, 4) Of course, there is a strong need for innovative technological tools, high-power vehicles, and “intelligent deep-water approaches”, which can allow researcher to develop professional formula, a number new of methodologies, and successfully transform the discovered marine chemicals from the deep waters into bio-products. Statistics indicate that “at least 20,000 new biochemical substances from marine plants and animals have been identified during the past 30 years, many with unique properties useful in fighting disease.” (National Research Council, 4) The deep-sea discoveries provide new perspectives to medicine. Some marine bacteria helped create drugs to improve memory processes in the brain and restore brain functioning, which may lead to Alzheimer disease. As seen, understanding the Earth’s oceans is essential to human health and the development of innovative medicine and treatment. Each innovative discovery reminds humans that ocean environment is full of unpredictable solutions, unique fantastic organisms, and bacteria that may help avoid threats to human health and save thousands of human lives.

Exploring the Earth’s ocean is also essential to understanding of human history, development of ancient civilizations, and origins of life. Due to the deep ocean exploration and oceanography scientists have obtained valuable information about the development of ancient civilizations, understood basic processes and environmental changes on the planet, and learned about human interaction with the ocean in the past. Exploring the deep waters researchers and oceanographers discovered multiple shocking artifacts, treasures, coins, giant statues, ancient constructions, ships, mysterious underwater ruins, structures, and even perfectly preserved underwater cities, which in its turn positively contributed to the world’s history, eliminated boarders between myths and realities, and provided significant insights into our origins, our development, and our lives today. As seen, “in spite the exceptional successes of deep-sea drilling for understanding the long- and very long-term history of the ocean …, increasing importance has recently become focused on changes during the past few hundred thousand years.” (Deacon, et al., 133) This is because of significant global climate changes, unknown oceanic circulations, deep-water geological changes, changes in water surface height and changes in water pressure. Fortunately, today’s technological development and innovative programs continue to increase drastically. Powerful underwater machines, the implementation of innovative tech tools and intelligent technology help to effectively perform, manage and regulate the scientific exploration procedures in the deep-water areas. Modern technology now allows humanity to better understand the circulations and biological productivity of the Earth’s ocean, to develop new techniques to solve “underwater issues”, and understand the role of deep waters in controlling the planet’s climate. In the twenty-first century, oceanography becomes a rapidly changing, dynamic discipline due to the powerful advancement in technology. Despite this, in order to understand deep ocean, we need not only reliable tools and good science, but “a good appreciation of science, and we can achieve a better understanding of what current scientific knowledge can tell us about the sea if we also have some information about how it was obtained.” (Deacon, et al., 2)

Nowadays deep ocean exploration is critical to human life on the Earth. Due to powerful technological development oceanography becomes a dynamic, fast-changing study, which helps us answer hot questions about our past, present, and future, better understand natural balance, health concepts, and global climate issues, predict possible dangers and threats to humanity. Deep ocean exploration gives humans more opportunities, more new sources, and more original underwater discoveries, which can help us to better understand potential environmental changes, analyze the dynamics of our planet, positively contribute to medicine, and manage effectively the existing issues to secure our nature and the Earth’s beauty for future generations to enjoy.
