The Importance Of Delivering Information On Example Of Chile Mining Accident

Delivering information is an important component of communication.  Proper delivery can help to present the information in the right way and may become hopeful in difficult situations. Communication and minding the audience was very important during the informational coverage of Coal mine collapse in Chili.

On the 5th of August in 2010 33 Chilean gold miners became trapped  2.300 feet under the ground. This incident happened in the gold copper mine in Copiapo (Weik, 2010).  During the first two weeks there were no information about the miners. It was unknown whether they were dead or alive.  In two weeks, rescue workers made a small hole in the ground and got the chance to get a message from trapped miners. Later a video camera was sent underground to take pictures of trapped miners. After some time gold-miners also used telephone to call to people  and tell them they were in good condition.

Luckily, ventilation shafts were not damaged during an accident and miners got enough fresh air to survive. They also used their equipment to recharge small lamps to have light. High temperature made a big problem for them. There was organized a food and water supply. Fortunately, there was detected no methane or other toxic gases which often supplement accidents in mines. After two weeks of staying under ground, miners were told that their rescue was going to take much time. There was also organized an opportunity to create a video message and each of the miners got twenty seconds to send message to his family.

During all this time a big number of rescuers did their best to save miners. This story became famous not only in Chili, but also abroad and a lot of people all over the world were tracing the story with hope and fear.  Coal miners were trapped for than 2.3000 feet under ground in a small rescue shaft designed for this purpose (Weik, 2010).

In general, they’ve spent more than two month underground. They had to find forces to survive and hope day by day, knowing about the difficultness of their situation. During their stay underground  they  made two small video clips to show their routine life and say hello to their families.

The government and rescue team had to use three plans in order to save people. The first plan included using  a Raise Borer Strata 950 drill. This drill is used to make ventilation holes. In addition, the rescue team had to make another hole with bigger drill. This plan included  the use of a a Schramm T-130, usually used to reach water underground.  Finally, a drill for oil was used and it helped to make a hole big enough to rescue people from their trap.  On October 13, more than two month after the collapse, the first miner  was lifted on the surface (Chile Mining Accident, 2010).  Rescue operation lasted almost all next day. The last one who left the shift  was the foreman of the group.

During the time spent underground, miners got assistance of different kind of specialists, including specialist from NASA, who helped them to overcome problems connected with their long isolation and staying in closed space. After the first plan proved to be ineffective, miners were announced they were to spend much time underground before rescuer could have reached them. Most of the miners felt good. Some of them had medical problems and needed immediate hospitalization.

Event was highlighted by multiple newsmakers and it was very important to provide people not only with the right information, but also to present it in the right form. Collapses of such scope, especially ones which affect lives of big number of  people and their families always cause loud reaction in the society.

During the rescue operation the President of Chile visited the place of collapse and spoke with the officials responsible of the collapse and for the rescue operation. During this operation other official figures also gave their comments concerning the situation. The manner of delivering message about the collapse in coal-mine would be different when addressing the relatives of trapped people and other organizations. Knowing the audience and using different approaches regarding the audience is very important. Sincerity and honesty are definitely very important in delivering  information to all of them, but it there are different nuances which should be considered while passing the news.

While delivering  information to the relative of coal-miners it was important to give them feeling of comfort and hope, despite the difficultness of the situation. It was also important not to hide the truth, but also not to make people too much scared and frustrated.  It is important to know about the needs of the family members while delivery information to them. Sympathy and compassion are extremely important while talking to the relatives, because these people may feel shock and panic. Family members and relatives needed all smallest details and all possible information. It is important to remember that detailed information and descriptions may help them feel psychological comfort. Individual approach is also important when talking to this category of people. Race, gender, social standing are important factors which should be considered while talking to the relatives of trapped miners. Some professional and technical information may be omitted, because not all people can understand it. Complex information should be delivered in simple words  in order to be understandable and clear.

The company’s employers are another category of people who should receive all information about the accident. Employers should be informed timely and also in great detail. This accident has direct connection to their work field and all of them understand about potential risks and dangers. They should be informed about the reasons of the accident, about safety measures and about different means to minimize danger. They also should know about all measures performed to rescue trapped miners. They should be informed about exact numbers and about all technical  details of the operation. Since they work with these people and are also in the risk group, they have right to get all information about the accident.

In both cases face-to-face communication would be the best choice because people in such situation need compassion and encouragement.
