Criminal Justice: Direct Supervision of Correctional Institutions | Discussion

Chapter 1

  • Why does the direct supervision environment allow female officers to be as successful, if not more, than male officers in the control of inmate behaviour?

The direct supervision environment is based on constant and direct contact with inmates which is aimed at reducing tension due to passive surveillance. Female officers are successful in direct supervision because they are good communicators. They can use their communication skills to establish positive relations with inmates and maintain acceptable standards of their behaviour (Wener et al. 7).

  • When the authors suggest that direct supervision will not “directly” effect offender recidivism, what do they mean? Can it have the potential to effect recidivism in some fashion?

The authors mean that direct supervision can lead to improved living conditions. As a result, direct supervision can help to create a positive environment for implementation of rehabilitative programs. In other words, due to better treatment of inmates, it is possible to reduce recidivism in jails and prisons. According to the authors, “ Direct supervision represents an attempt at people management” (Wener et al. 6).

 Chapter 2

  • Aside from the differences in the physical amenities (carpeting, furnishings, etc.), what are the major differences between indirect and direct supervision styles?

The major differences between indirect and direct supervision styles include different approaches to management of inmates, their behaviour, decisions, and activities. According to the authors, “they are designed to express the expectation of acceptable behaviour by the inmates” (Wener ate al. 11). The major difference is that correctional officers are not separated from inmates, but they are placed inside their living unit. As a result, they are involved in close personal interaction with inmates, which allows they detecting any problems immediately after they emerge in the setting.

 Chapter 4

  • What role are the corrections officer expected to leadership on a direct supervision housing unit?

The corrections officers are expected to serve the role of a leader in the direct supervision housing unit. Due to their commitment toward their job, they can succeed in management practices, meet the organization’s mission and improve safety and security in prisons and jails. Inmates do not have the feeling of isolation from correctional staff. They have a chance to resolve any problems and avoid negative consequences of possible internal conflicts.

  • Why was the general concept of direct supervision rejected by many jail administrators and even when it was accepted, how was it modified?

The general concept of direct supervision was rejected by many jail administrators because they considered this model “not consonant with some corrections professionals’ deepest feelings about what a correctional setting should be alike” (Wener et al. 22). When it was accepted, it was modified to allow  correctional staff having additional training on how to treat inmates effectively through direct supervision. It becomes clear that correctional officers should be trained to have a direct contact with inmates.
