Discussion of Environmental Science: Genetic Engineering

A big variety of different scientific discoveries made it possible to call the last century a breakthrough time and a scientific and technological revolution. Most of the achievements were designed to make human life easier, as well as to feed, warm, dress, and cure a huge number of people, solve seemingly unsolvable problems and tasks of a global scale. The emergence and application of many scientific developments really bring invaluable assistance, but the use of others raises many questions, doubts, negative public reaction and disputes among scientists today. Special attention is usually paid to genetically modified foods because the combination of genetic engineering with plant growing and vegetable growing and obtaining rich yields was once presented as a breakthrough that will help feed the entire population of the planet.

The main argument of the opponents of genetic engineering is the unnaturalness of this approach, interference in the natural workshop. They say that it is not known what effect the gene mutation may have on the human body. However, scientists and physicians parry these arguments by the fact that in the course of evolution, almost all organisms have undergone mutation processes. Through evolutionary selection, plants, animals and man have passed this process. Nature culls useless properties, forming and fixing useful ones (Moore, 2017). Today, scientists have learned to speed up the process with their own efforts. Moreover, some scientists consider that the use of transgenic engineering in various fields, at the interface between the production of products and medicines, opens new perspectives, not only to rid the planet of hunger, but also to treat many diseases effectively and safely for the body.

Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that because of the GMO policy, there can be fixed the replacement of local traditional plant varieties with the same international plants, which fill the whole world. As a result, it leads to the violation of the principle of biodiversity. The matter is not in the gastronomic side of the issue, when each region could give its own variety of products and please people with their specific taste. It is important to realize that just the very fact of the disappearance of biodiversity threatens the safety of the planet, since any disease peculiar to a certain variety immediately becomes a threat to the entire planet. It means that the spread of GMOs does not solve the problem of hunger, as international GMO lobbyists often state. On the contrary, it leads humanity to the risk of global hunger.
