Discussion of Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain Management (SCM), as a scientific and practical discipline, studies the processes of creating and transforming resources in industrial, logistics, and trade enterprises from the value chain, as well as the operations of inter-organizational interaction in moving these resources.

The wholesale and retail industry is vigorously increasing in the market today, and SCM is the only way to keep up with innovations, transferring of goods to consumers, and boosting customer service with lowering financial costs (CSCMP 2). For instance, SCM for wholesale business is mostly balancing consumer demand and values (cf. wholesale characterizes by high prices, a large volume of works, and keeping the goods in good condition till they reach retailers). It requires a smooth connection between the parties in the supply chain, the visibility of stock movements, and the regular analysis of sales data to help to identify market trends in a better way.

Regarding the retail industry, it is almost similar to wholesale, but the volume of goods is higher since they should move at the speed of light while the cycle of time is not enough. In other words, consumers want production to be delivered fast, and SCM is a great assistant because it allows retailers to provide high-quality goods/developing the best functions along with minimizing costs on the movement. SCM comprises optimizing operations to maximize speed and efficiency (CSCMP 9). Speed is an essential factor because customers appreciate the speedy service as well as maximizing efficiency.

An example can be an effective SCM can be Colgate. The company keeps the diversity of production, customer support service, distribution, optimization, quick movement, and productive contribution channels across the world (Kiger 7). Colgate production is available in supermarkets, pharmacies, small wholesalers, stores, etc. Ultimately, SCM is rapidly increasing the management of the supply and meet customers’ expectations about goods. Sometimes it is hard to satisfy the client both with speed and good condition, but SCM is the number one priority for wholesale and retail businesses now.
