Discussion of the Salton Sea

On December 14, 2017, David Bacon published his article “The Salton Sea Is Dying—We Can’t Let That Happen.” In his article, he raises several critical issues which are currently taking place in the Salton Sea ecosystem. The author claims that the people who live in the area are suffering because of air polluted with the dust and other contaminants. Their and their children’s health is predisposed to severe respiratory issues such as asthma, allergies, and others. There is only one solution to this problem from doctors’ point of view: they should not go outside to protect themselves from inhaling pollutants.

Moreover, the ecosystem has changed significantly as the waters are getting saltier, and more polluted with pesticides and other chemicals which are used in agriculture. Much fish, birds, and plants have died because of those changes. The area is invaded by invasive species. The article raises critical questions regarding the current environmental changes in the Salton sea area which impact the health of the local population, the infrastructure, and the ecosystem in the whole significantly. Thus, the need for more in-depth research is necessary in order to create the awareness of the local community, businesspeople, and government.

The harm to the ecosystem is a critical aspect of the Salton sea dying. Any existing organism is a link in some food-chain. Any change in the ecosystem by introduction or exclusion of a specific link can cause significant changes or even destruction of it. This may also interrupt the food chains existing in the particular area. Thus, certain plants, insects, and animals can become extinct forever which had happened in the area. “Phosphates and nitrates from fertilizers now create algae blooms that deplete oxygen and kill fish and birds” (Bacon 2017 p. 4). To improve the situation, the people who plan the new introductions to the ecosystem have to investigate the food chains, flora, and fauna existing in the area. They have to make sure that no animal, insect or plant will disappear because of new changes introduced to the ecosystem.

Invasive species are dangerous for any ecosystem, and they put at risk life and health of humanity as well. Because of the Salton sea has got saltier than the waters in the ocean, currently “Hardy tilapia flourished, becoming the dominant fish species” (Bacon 2017 p. 4). The fishermen cannot boast fine income because of this fact. The agricultural commerce has also inputted in this issue. Thus, all the people in the Salton area and nearest cities are in critical responsibility for the development of this problem. To save the Salton Sea and its ecosystem, people should think first about the environmental issues and then about their desires.

Allergies, asthma and other respiratory health issues in the local population is a severe problem which demands its urgent decision. One woman has stated that her son “comes out to play baseball with a glove on one hand and his inhaler in the other” (Bacon 2017 p. 5). An allergy occurs as a reaction of the immune system to pollen, foods, fur, dust and other foreign to body substances causing allergic reactions. Allergy may outgrow over time in some cases and likewise develop regardless age, even during adulthood. In Salton sea area, the environment plays a significant role in allergy development. Similarly to allergies, asthma is caused by the dust’s particles that sedate in the lungs of a person. Those particles stuck there forever, and the person becomes short of breath. He or she may experience a lack of oxygen.

All the mentioned issues are important and require immediate solution. Moreover, the environmental issues sound more severe as the people in the area are poor. “Nearly a quarter of its 177,000 residents—over 80 percent of whom are Latino—live in poverty” (Bacon 2017 p. 5). They cannot move nor pay for their medical treatment. The Salton Sea is their place to live and make money for survivance.
