District Curriculum Design & Development Policy

Instructional leaders interview summary

The interview with two different instructional leaders helps to better understand their respective roles and their relation to district curriculum design and development policy in correlation with state regulations. It has been found that development policy has a strong impact on the role of an instructional leader. Both instructional leaders effectively use the school’s vision and mission while making instructional decisions for the school and its students. The comprehensive Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) is based on the school’s mission. The role of an instructional leader is to ensure instructional coherence and foster shared vision for the school’s improvement. This correlates to the established federal and state regulatory compliance because decision making should be data-driven.  The school’s CIP plan should be reviewed and updates regularly, depending on the completion of the projects, funding and financial conditions, and changes in legislation. It is required that “all schools should develop and submit for review an annual School Improvement Plan” (Duke et al., 2012, p. 2). The CIP has a significant impact on curricular decisions, such as curriculum planning, school staff development and training, and school organization, because it makes changes in academic performance of students. Besides, the curricular decisions are made collaboratively, especially regarding intervention strategies that promote the academic success of all students. The CIP can be viewed as the product of school planning progress; therefore, any curricular decisions reflect various aspects of school improvement planning. The process used in the school for textbook selection is the so-called vetting process. This process is evaluated for effectiveness through control and assessment procedures provided by state textbook adoption boards or school committee. Due attention is paid to the compliance with the established state citizenship laws, which foster various forms of patriotism.  The process of textbook selection is closely related to production of books and is linked to the curriculum standards. In general, the curriculum guidelines are used to make correct decisions in textbook selection process.
