Does Children’s Motor Development Affect Children’s Cognitive or Perceptual Development?


This paper explores and answers the question about children’s motor development and its interaction with children’s cognitive or perceptual development. Psychology of infancy and childhood is really difficult to understand exactly. Humanity development is an essential and rapid process. Researchers, scientists and professionals received various arguments and results about different factors, processes, domains in children’s motor development. This paper is based on some support evidence that helps to get the right explanations. This writing activity provides three statements in support of the opinion, three pieces of empirical studies as support for arguments, and a closing statement.


Children’s motor development interacts with their perceptual development, as perception action plays an important role in their personal experience and interaction. There are many arguments in support of this statement. First, motor development affects children’s cognitive development through touching and reaching processes. Second, cognitive functions are affected by intellectual adaptation, its culture in which a child develops and therefore interacts with motor development. Third, as children develop increasing motor competence, they use perceptions, explorations and observations in order to make choices concerning motor actions.

First argument in support of children’s motor development and its interaction with cognitive development is that motor development connected with the ability to think, perceive and mentally represent events. Piaget in his study about children’s perceptions made some researches about the way child forms information from environment and adopts it. He talked here about assimilation and accommodation, and found that through different age stages child forms motor development that interacts with cognitive development (Piaget, 1959). Although Piaget’s researches are the theme to criticism, they are often used in order to guide research in childhood perceptual development.

Second argument is based on Diamond’s observations. According to his study, children’s motor development interacts with children’s cognitive development with the help of factors like culture, social relations, brain functioning, mental health (Diamond, 2007). When it comes to motor development and perception, he made some observations that motor, cognitive and perception developments appear in the cultural environment like emotion and social relations. Here this experience interacts with physical and mental health including brain functioning. So the perception and motor developments are interacted processes. The Diamond’s research based on cognitive function and its affection by children’s culture made a great impact in supporting motor development and its interaction with cognitive development.

Behaviors like turning the head in order to see something shows the interaction of motor, cognitive and perceptual domains in children’s development. They are highly motivated to explore and observe. They do not only see, they look, and through this “looking process” they get the interaction with perceptual or cognitive development. Here the third argument is base on motor actions. In order to reach their goals, children use higher mental processes. According to the Vygotsky and his research study, the environment in which child grows up will influence how he think, perceive and observe particular information. Motor development means basic material and ability for intellectual development. Children use memory, perception, attention as it is an important and essential process in getting the right vision. Motor development is in tight connection with cognitive development, as children use social information to guide their motor behavior in challenging situations that gives an important mean to study child cognitive development.

Children’s perceptual skills and motor development interacts with each other during every waking moment. The studies of Piaget, Diamond and Vygotsky show some support evidence of this statement. Children develop perceptional skills in order to distinguish features of different people and their attitude, the environment, colors… they will get it only through the interaction with motor development. They have their own object explorations, often by touching with their hands. The processes of walking, crawling, and running are essential part of cognitive process. They give new opportunities for further studying. Children are involved in processes connected with perceptual development, like imitation. These two processes like motor and cognitive developments interact with each other for better social skills, social rules, and social behaviors. Through these processes, child can get huge experience, knowledge about the environment, people and objects around them. It is the base for such abilities like writing, eating, drinking, and drawing. Children should be surrounded by various opportunities in order to practice and improve their motor development that is essential in their lives.
