Article on Research Question: Does Laptop Programs Have a Positive Impact on the Literacy of Students?

The article Digital writing and diversity: the effects of school laptop programs on literacy processes and outcomes by B. Zheng, M. Warschauer, and G. Farkas reveals the positive effect of laptop programs on the literacy of students, especially from at risk groups, such as minority or low-income families. The study conducted by the researchers focuses on the experience of Colorado district and the article represents the empirical study that reveals positive effects of using laptops by, at least some students. On the other hand, the authors recognize that the data collected in the course of the study are insufficient to obtain adequate results and findings of the study are still uncertain. The authors admit the limitation of their study. Nevertheless, even fragmentary findings reveal positive effects of laptop programs on the development of literacy in at –risk student groups, such as Hispanics, low-income families, and others.

The empirical study was conducted within the Colorado district that may be another limitation of the study because the data within one district only may be not representative. Nevertheless, the study reveals the potential of laptop programs and its positive effects on the literacy of students. This means that laptop programs have the potential to enhance the literacy of students. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to find out effective ways to use laptop programs in the development of literacy of students. The further studies should focus on the revelation of the specific mechanism of how laptops and laptop programs help students to improve their literacy and to make substantial academic progress.

Therefore, the article Digital writing and diversity: the effects of school laptop programs on literacy processes and outcomes by B. Zheng, M. Warschauer, and G. Farkas helps to reveal the potential of laptop programs and their positive impact on literacy of students.
