Dogs Our Best Friends & Coworkers Essay

Historically, dogs were among the first animals domesticated by humans. Initially, people used dogs as assistants during the hunts and to protect their dwellings. However, steadily, dogs have started to perform new functions and their role has changed since dogs have become universal animals used in different fields which are not just animals that serve humans but they are true friends of humans and their coworkers.

Today, dogs are used in different fields but primarily dogs became friends and companions of people. In such a way, the role of dogs has changed from animals that served to humans into companions, who are rather friends that animals, who serve to human needs. In this regard, dogs play an important part and often people view their dogs as family member, who have their name, place in the household, whom people take care of.

At the same time, dogs are used by humans for multiple purposes. For instance, dogs are used to assist people with various impairments. Guide dogs are widely used to help people with visual impairment to walk through the city independently of other humans. In such a way, dogs help people to move freely compensating them their visual impairment helping them to feel free and not limited in the freedom of their movement because of their visual impairment.

Dogs take an active part in rescue operations. Today, the involvement of dogs in rescue operations in case of earthquakes, avalanches, and other emergencies has already become a norm. In such a way, the involvement of dogs into rescue operations contributes to the faster identification of victims and injured people, who are affected by natural disasters or other emergencies (Gould 125). As a result, dogs facilitate the revelation of people affected by the disaster. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the development of rescue operations is quite challenging because dogs can help find people, which cannot be identified by even the most sophisticated technology and equipment. In such a situation, individuals rely on the identification of dogs and help people to manage emergencies and prevent problems caused by emergencies.

Dogs contribute to the maintenance of the physical safety of facilities, both private and public. In this regard, dogs may guard not only private households but also large facilities belonging to government agencies or large corporations (Gould 182). In fact, dogs maintain the security of facilities and guard the facilities from intrusion. Even though the contemporary technology and equipment allow the enhancement of the physical security of facilities and buildings, dogs are still widely used for the security purpose. In such a way, they still play an important part in the maintenance of the security of facilities, including strategically important areas.

Dogs participate in law enforcement. For instance, dogs are used to search drugs, explosives and other illegal materials. Dogs have become perfect “detectives”, since they can detect drugs or other illegal materials fast and accurately (Gould 199). In this regard, even the contemporary technology and equipment cannot be as helpful as dogs are. This is why dogs are widely used to enhance the law enforcement and public safety. In addition, dogs are still used to search lost people. For instance, there are still frequent cases of dogs finding children, who have got lost in forests or other places and where people cannot find them without the assistance of dogs.

At the same time, the main role of dogs today is the role of friends and companions. Today, people view dogs as their friends rather than their animals, who serve to meet needs of people as they used to do in the past, when dogs were used intensively in hunting and guarding (Gould 211). This is why the change of the role of dogs in the life of people contributed to the consistent diversification of pedigrees of dogs. Today, dogs are extremely diverse and, at first glance, it is not always possible how some pedigrees of dogs emerged and what was the purpose of those people, who actually selected such dogs through the complex process of the natural selection and development of target attributes of dogs, such as size, traits of character, etc. For instance, today, there are plenty of tiny dogs, which have never existed before and which have never existed into the wild nature. However, such dogs are perfect for the contemporary urban environment, where people are often limited in their household space and areas, where their dogs can live or stay. As a result, people condition attributes, features and traits of character of their dogs respectively to their needs and wants.

Thus, dog has always accompanied humans since prehistoric times. However, if initially dogs served as assistants in hunting and guarding, then today they have rather become companions and friends of people. Nevertheless, they still capable to perform multiple functions, such as assistance to people with visual impairment, assistants to law enforcement agencies, participants of rescue operations and other functions which increase the role of dogs in human life even more.
