Ecological Footprint Activity

Ecological footprint is a focal point to be considered in the modern society, yet people tend to omit it. Overall wellbeing is an issue of everybody’s responsibility. Passing such type of activity would be beneficial for any individual, as discovering the real scale of own negative contribution to the ecology allows to make further steps to decrease it. For this assignment, the reflection on my ecological footprint is provided.

Ecological Footprint means the evaluation of “the ecological assets that a given population requires to produce the natural resources it consumes” (“Ecological Footprint – Global Footprint Network”). The activity enabled me to see the sides of my life that have a solid influence on the environment. The outcomes were surprising. I thought my life does not interfere seriously with the ecology. Yet, it appeared to be that to cover my lifestyle’s impact, there would be 4-7 planets needed! I simply wonder, how many planets would the activity show for the people who buy a lot of new clothes, gadgets, new furniture, etc. Such results showed me that, even though I thought that my impact was moderate or little, it is not. Such experience allows to re-evaluate own position and see the truth.

Through the activity, I saw the ways many aspects of living influence on the environment. It was depicted evidently through placing some new objects after each section of the questions. The effect is bright – the consequences are shown immediately. Starting from the clear green area, we see a place filled with the stores, houses, trash cans, transport, etc. I realize that my behaviors that are connected with transportation contribute to me ecological footprint, yet it is hard to avoid. Now I realize the way in which my purchases, food habits and other points of the lifestyle are my responsibility when my footprint is considered.

There are steps that I have to do to lower my ecological footprint. I suppose that they would be quite similar to those that all the people have to do to improve our overall ecological wellbeing as a humanity. First of all, it concerns reducing the consumption of the animal-based products. Not only it would better for the animals, but also such step would allow saving the territory that is taken for the farms and decreasing the level of carbon dioxide emissions. Further, another step to be taken is trying to recycle material and buy items that were less packaged or use recycled material.

Other part concerns electricity. It would be a proper idea to choose energy efficient appliances and renewable energy sources. I really enjoy the idea of the solar panels that could cover the need for electricity. The wind is another source of energy that could be used. There are tiny, rational and easy steps to save electricity: for instance, the simplest thing to do is to turn off lights when leaving the room, while many people do not pay attention to it. The same can be said about water. Some people spend a huge amount of water while brushing teeth; while it is a sound idea to close the tap during the time it is not needed and open it after again. I do not think that these steps are something extremely hard. I think it would be harder for the people to decline using animal-based foods and clothes.

To sum up, ecological footprint is an issue that requires attention and acceptance of own responsibility. People tend to be not conscious, thinking that they do not really do harm, or other people do, so avoiding doing something would not help. But that is not true. Every person can start changing own life to support ecology. If many people would choose to support ecology, we would live in the beautiful place that would be better for the people’s health.
