“Economic & Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844” By Marx

What Marx means when he argues that under capitalism, “the worker sinks to the level of a commodity?”                                                                                                                                           Marx shows that under capitalism, people accepted the language and the laws of political economy, they assumed private property; “the separation of labour, capital, and land, and likewise of wages, profit, and capital; the division of labour; competition; the conception of exchange value, etc” (Marx, 1944). In other words, “we have shown that the worker sinks to the level of a commodity, and moreover the most wretched commodity of all” (Marx, 1844). On the whole, in capitalism industrialization is a major mechanism for economic development and every economic process requires things to be made faster and cheaper. Marx’s statement means that people completely changed their laws of economy; they changed the worker’s lands into factories and plants; employees became a part of a production process, and they were seen not as workers but as capital; people began to produce a number of things and items not for personal use but for the use of other people in order to satisfy their needs and well-being.
