Decreasing Tuition As A Way Of Funding Knight Science Campus

The University of Oregon is a public research university that is known for excellence in teaching. Its vision is to be a preeminent and innovative educational facility. The University traditionally focuses on the advancement of new approaches and development of new teaching strategies to reach a larger number of students. The inclusion of many students in the learning process is very important not only for the University of Oregon, but also for graduate students because this is a chance for them to obtain their higher education and continue their career in the University or science. However, the education at the University of Oregon is not only about learning, it is also about tuition. Recently, the creation of new science campus was proposed. It was suggested that it can be funded by the rise in tuition. This paper will argue it is more beneficial to decrease the tuition of the University of Oregon since it will result in a number of positive consequences for the undergraduates and the future students.

First of all, it may be useful to explore the background of the issue, namely the proposed initiative of Knight Science Campus. As was written by Patrick Phillips (2017), “the exhilaration of announcing the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact will not soon fade. As many said at the time, it marks a historic and transformative leap for the University of Oregon. Now that we’ve announced the gift, the hard work of turning an idea into reality is just beginning.” Phil Knight is a graduate of the University of Oregon, he and his wife donated $500 million to initiate the campus which would be created with the goal of enhancing the academic performance of the students. The debate around is that the proposed campus seems to be more beneficial to the new students, rather those who are undergraduates. However, this is not completely true as it will be shown in the future.

The change of the policy will have a considerable impact on the undergraduate student. The major benefit of the decrease of tuition is the availability of education to more students. Some students may have experienced difficulties with their access to education as they were unable to afford their education because of the high tuition. Some students were more likely to focus on their part-time job rather than on their learning so that they could cover costs of their education because of the high tuition. The decrease of the tuition will ease the financial pressure on those students, who use loans to fund their learning at the University of Oregon. The decrease of the tuition will definitely have a positive impact on their learning and the availability of education at the University of Oregon.

Another point that should be mentioned that the development of Knight Science Campus will contribute to the enhancement of educational services and scientific basis of the University which will have a positive impact on students’ future career. In this regard, they may need to develop better opportunities to focus on their scientific career since the University of Oregon will be able to invest more funds into the enhancement of its scientific basis due to revenues obtained from the increased tuition. In this regard, the decrease of the tuition will be beneficial for the students, who could not afford it. Therefore, students of the University are likely to avoid the problem of the affordability of education and costs of education at the University.

The change of the tuition is likely to result from the students’ satisfaction because they will enjoy the decreased tuition policy, especially, if they could not afford it before. This is why the introduction of the decreased tuition should also be positioned the University as a way to preserve the availability of education and to minimize the student dissatisfaction. In addition, students should also be presented with alternative options on how to continue their education at the University, especially if they are undergraduates. The University should offer them some options that will make education available to them. For example, the University may offer undergraduate students a discount to complete their education, while new students will pay the full price of tuition. In such a way, undergraduates will be able to complete their education on affordable conditions and a decrease of tuition will be one of them.

Also, the University may offer some benefits to students, such as better career opportunities or solid scientific basis and career in the field of science which students may pursuit after their graduation. In such a way, students will be motivated to continue their education. Also, the University should consider the introduction of more flexible schedule and wider use of distance learning to ensure that students can combine effectively their work and learning. The increased tuition is likely to urge students to do the more part-time job that will take more time, which they dedicate to learning at the moment. The introduction of more flexible schedule will make it possible for students to work and earn more and to learn, when they have time and when it is convenient for them. For example, they may schedule their work and learning in such a way that they may combine their learning with their work.

There are several ways regarding how the price of tuition can be decreased. As we know, from 2014, our campus has increased the tuition every year until today. Especially for international students, because of the exchange rate increase, we need to pay more tuition than before. The textbook is also too expensive for us. So, if professors add more e-book, it would decrease the amount of money needed to be paid by the students

Another viable way to decrease the tuition is to offer more course and attract more students. We think our campus have very less major options to choose. Especially for me, I really want to study the nutriology, but there is no nutriology in U of O. So, I just can study Chemistry first. Our solution is that our campus can add more major options to let the student choose their favorite one. And make sure every student which choose U of O can have their own interested major to study and get some explore are not students study only for the graduate. I think this is a good way to let our campus to be a preeminent and innovative public research university.

However, it may be useful to taken into account the view of those who oppose the decrease of tuition. They would point out that by doing so, the University will receive less money and the initial donation by Phil and Penny Knight will not cover all the costs. It is true that a decrease of tuition may result in the decrease of the amount of money received. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that as more students will be attracted, they will bring more money as well. Therefore, decreasing the tuition is a logical strategic move.

Thus, the decrease of tuition is the new policy of the University of Oregon that is likely to have a positive impact on students. So, the management of the University should communicate the reason and effects of the new policy to students, and by showing them, especially undergraduate students, that the administration cares about them and would like to provide the best conditions for learning.
