The Impact of Cellphones on the Learning Process

In today’s world, because of powerful technological advancement, digital tools, and innovative gargets a lot of things, norms, and behaviors have been lost and forgotten. People forgot the real essence of face-to-face communication and continue to involve themselves in the world of technology that makes a powerful impact on the individual’s learning, daily activities, relationships, emotional health, and behaviors. In modern environment, on the one side, “more teachers and classrooms use technology to post assignments, flip classrooms and utilize this wonderful world of the internet” (nytimes.com) On the other side, I consider tech tools, including cell phones, make a strong devastating effect on the young generation’s lifestyles, learning, achievements, and critical thinking and ruin the existing moral and social standards. I am against allowing cell phones in the class as it leads to low quality of learning and poor student’s performance, reduce educational productivity, negatively affect the individual’s mental health and cognitive abilities, eliminate the student’s inner potential, memory, and the process of gaining knowledge.

Researchers and psychologists agree that cell phones ruin classroom environment, negatively affect teacher-student collaboration, and reduce productivity among students. Cell phone availability in the class environment may ruin student’s self-control and cognitive processes. Additionally, cell phones interrupt the learning process, reduce connections with classmates and relationships with teachers, and negatively affect social interactions, which are “a crucial part of children’s cognitive, academic, physical and mental wellness” (nytimes.com). But in order to increase the quality of learning, motivation, and hard work among students, schools and educators should practice “intelligent” approaches and instead of punishment, isolation, strict prohibitions or severe school suspensions teachers should implement so-called restorative justice, “an approach that focuses on nonjudgmental discussion, developing empathy, and repairing the damage” (bostonglobe.com) Thus, it is crucially important to communicate with students, explain possible consequences of their actions and choices, as well as the impact of cell phones on their learning within classroom environment.
