Employee Rights and Responsibilities Free

Employee Motivation and Performance

  1. Select at least three policies mentioned in the interview and discuss whether or not you would be offended by the policy

Reviewing the NPR interview on Bizarre Workplace Policies, it is possible to identify three policies that are really bizarre. These are the popcorn ban policy, the three-toe shoe policy, and the personal item policy, which requires employees having only one personal item in their cube (e.g. a framed photo). Actually, an employee would not be offended by these policies because his/her rights are not violated. These policies do not lead to sexual harassment, unethical conduct, bullying, conflict of interest or racial or gender discrimination.

  1. Describe why you think the company implemented the policy and whether you would have handled the situation differently and how.

I think that the company like Amazon implemented the policy because of the need for disciplining their employees. Although these unusual workplace policies seem to characterize Amazon as “a harsh and punishing place to work”, these polices can be viewed as a tool for establishing a healthy working environment, which contributes to improvement of employee productivity and performance (Bizarre Workplace Policies? Our Listeners Experienced Them, 2015). I would have handled the situation differently to avoid using unusual workplace policies that could embarrass employees and lead to low motivation and job satisfaction. I would have conducted meetings to announce the workplace rules that prohibit employees from inadequate behaviour, such as using microwave popcorn or having a large number of personal items on the desk in the workplace. Researchers suggest that workplace policies can become “motivational determinants in the workplace” that affect job performance of employees and shape employee conduct in the workplace (Lazaroiu, 2015, p. 97).

  1. Would these policies cause you to contemplate leaving the company?

These polices would not cause me to contemplate leaving the company because they do not have a negative impact on my work schedule. All I need is to adapt to these policies in order to perform my duties and responsibilities effectively and avoid violation of ethical conduct.  These policies are bizarre, but, at the same time, they direct employees in their decision making that affects the overall workplace climate.  According to researchers, workplace flexibility shaped by workplace policies leads to harmony or “the ability of workers to make choices influencing when, where, and for how long they engage in work-related tasks” (Hill et al., 2008, p. 149). This fact means that workplace flexibility is one of the critical factors that affect creation of an effective workplace.

  1. Do any of the policies violate employee rights as we understand them from our reading

Undoubtedly, there are some policies that violate employee rights as we understand them from the assigned reading. These policies include “no bereavement leave for hospice worker and no maternity leave at a women’s college” (Bizarre Workplace Policies? Our Listeners Experienced Them, 2015). In this case, the employer offers the workplace policies that are inconsistent with the employee rights, including provision of certain benefits, such as  bereavement leave and maternity leave. Bereavement leave is supported by the Employment Law in the state of Oregon. The law took effect January 1, 2014. In other states, “employers, at their discretion, may maintain bereavement leave policies or practices and, in certain circumstances, may be obligated to comply with their established policy or practice” (Employment Law Handbook, 2018). Employees are not entitled to paid maternity leave, but the US Employment law provides an employee (an expectant or new mother) with a right to a temporary and unpaid period of absence from work during the months immediately before and after childbirth.

  1. Share at least two suggestions, based on your reading, to help organizations avoid wrongful discharge lawsuits.

First, it is necessary to avoid wrongful discharge lawsuits through development of adequate workplace policies. There is a need for addressing the needs of employees to ensure that increased job engagement, job satisfaction, and employee retention, as well as providing support to mental health of employees (Jacob et al., 2008).

Second, it is necessary for organizations to comply with the established Employment laws that guarantee certain rights to employees. It is recommended to establish contracts between the employer and the employee.
