Ethical Writing & Research In Criminal Justice Discipline Essay

Ethical writing and research are utterly important for Criminal Justice discipline. Usually ethics is defined as “(1) “a discipline dealing with good and evil and with moral duty” or (2) “moral principles or practice” (Neocleous, 2004). According to the first part of the definition ethics is considered to belong to areas of study itself. Criminal Justice in its turn is a kind of hybrid discipline, which involves studies of various areas, including that of philosophy and correspondingly – ethics. The second part of the definition is based on the assumptions that ethic should contribute to building moral principles and regulate the behavior. In other words ethics is vitally important for understanding of moral duties and making clear distinctions between good and evil. Taking into consideration that one of the main tasks of criminal justice is to take care of order in the contemporary society, this is evident that it is not possible to imagine becoming a specialist in Criminal Justice without knowing ethics. The professionalism of police workers is directly related to their knowledge and application of ethical norms, otherwise the cases of misconduct might lead to improper fulfillment of the professional duties. At the same time this is likely to have negative impact upon the perception of the Criminal Justice by society. Any profession, which presumes having a least the smallest portion of power over other people, needs badly to be related to ethical rules and following them. “Ethics is an important area within criminal justice practice and scholarship since criminal justice practitioners, especially the police, are continually under scrutiny” (Neocleous, 2004).

Thus in order to avoid the situations of prejudice, unethical behavior, wrong approaches to solving ethical dilemmas and consequent breaking of the social trust towards Criminal Justice, it is necessary to include both theoretical and practical studies of this discipline.
