Forensic Science : Blood Spatter

Bloodstain pattern or blood spatter is an essential measure in forensic medicine. Experts in this area make use of this to gather material evidence during an investigation. However, it is essential that if one is to use blood stain or spatter as material evidence, there is a need to understand bloodstain pattern. In forensic medicine, the experts involved in analyzing bloodstain patterns at crime scenes are the bloodstain pattern analyst. The bloodstain pattern analyst help determines the angle of impact, the object of impact, and the distance of impact. In bloodstain pattern analysis, the analyst checks the physical characteristics of the bloodstain patterns, the size, shape, distribution, general appearance, surface texture, and location. They interpret the present pattern types and what may have caused them. Due to the increasing importance of bloodstain pattern to determine the cause of an incident or a crime, it is necessary to research bloodstain pattern analysis continuously. A new set of data was established for training and research purpose in forensic medicine for blood pattern analysis.

This data consists of sixty-one blood spatter designs scanned at high resolution and generated through controlled impact events simulating forensic beating situations. This was done to determine the different geometry and speed the impact of a solid object would have on a source of blood. The result generated by Attinger, Liu, Bybee, and De Brabanter (648) showed the blood droplets travel a distance towards a poster board sheet creating a spatter. The general aim of this research would be to determine the impact velocity and distance between a blood source and a target sheet. The purpose of these data generated by Attinger, Liu, Bybee, and De Brabanter is to provide further researchers with the ability to test crime scene reconstruction. These model would also help classify patterns concerning their origin as well as provide more accurate bloodstain pattern analysis methods.

The importance of analyzing blood pattern is excellent, especially creating methods where it can simulate the real crime situations in an enclosed area in order to identify impact f origin of blood spatters correctly. Furthermore, it can be used to teach and instruct new forensic analysts.
